Do I need to cancel my PAYG sim?

I've had an Orange PAYG sim (not on a contract, just top-up) for a few years now.

In a couple of months, I will be travelling back to Australia and want to know if I need to cancel my sim or just never use it anymore.

I was hoping that I might be able to use whatever credit is left to text my family and stuff whilst travelling and then bin it when the credit runs out.

I guess Orange have some of my details from when I bought the sim. Do I need to contact them and cancel my sim?

I'm not up on mobiles, but I've got one of these too. The SIM was free, and I put around 5 quid on it per year. When finished with it, I was just planning to destroy it. Cannot think of any reason why this wouldn't work, but I'd be interested to know if there is :)

Just bin it when you have finished with it. After about 6 months or so of non-use Orange may get around to reissuing the number to someone else.
