Gas supply Cut
No Gas supply.
Hi to a great site with a mine of information. It's great.:T
I have a problem with my gas supply. The contractors are replacing the gas main in my street and cut off my supply whilst I was on holiday. On my return the contractor knocked on the door and tried to reinstate the gas main but encountered problems and could not reconnect my supply. The contractor said he would send the engineer round to sort out the problem. That was eight days ago and the contractors have moved on leaving a whopping great hole across my drive so i cannot park my car on my drive, no gas and no contact from the engineer.
What should I do to A, get my gas supply reinstated and B, am I entitled to compensation?
Thanks in anticipation of some remedy to the problem.

Is this a problem with re-lighting your boiler?
Just with you saying he knocked on your door when you returned or is your meter inside?0 -
Hi,
The meter is inside and the contractors have to run a new plastic main but are having trouble feeding it through the old iron main. The contractor came into the house and disconnected the meter and just left it laying under the stairs when they failed to bring in the new main0 -

B. Yes0 -
it is NOT the gas supplier the op needs to call, it is the company carrying out the work on behalf of the gas network, what are are you in as that will dictate your first point of contact the the gas networks enquiries number ie. national grid, southern gas networks, wales and west utilities etc, they can check which company is responsible for mains work in your area and give you the correct contact number for you to call.
This work is NOT the responsibilty if the supplier as the mtr cannot be connected if the work has not been completed nor the hole reinstated - both of which are the responsibilty of the contract company carrying out the work on behalf of the network.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
its got to be the gas suppliers problem as you are paying them for your gas, it would surely be upto them to then chase the contractor responsible for your areaEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

Sorry don't agree.
Obviously it is not the fault of the Gas Company and it is the contractor that is responsible.
However if I get my gas from a company it is their responsibility to ensure the continuity of my supply.
If workmen somewhere damage a gas supply, or electricity cable and interupt my supply, I go to the company who supply my gas/electricity.0 -
Did you receive a letter from the gas network owner in advance of the mains replacement being carried out? If so phone the number on that letter. If you tell us where in the country you live then I can advise you of the name of the company that transports your gas.
Cardew and lemontart are both correct in their own seperate ways. You have a contract with your gas supplier - the sell you gas and you pay them for it. If you aren't getting a supply then phone them and they will advise you of the company that transports the gas in your area. Ulimateley the supplier wont rectify this situation for you, it will be the transporter.
All transporters have compensation procedures for interruption to gas supply. I'm not sure how it will go with regards to this work being done while you were on holiday and the fact that they were unable to gain access to complete the work in a timely manner. If you have now been back from holiday for 8 days and you have still not had your supply reinstated then you can expect to claim £30 per 24 hour period without gas. That is so long as you have made an effort to allow them access to complete the work and they simply have not done it.0 -
Thanks to you all for your contributions. I take on board the advice from you all and to Gman.
I live in West London HA4 Ruislip postcode.
The farce continues because when I arrived home this afternoon the hole on the drive had been backfilled and the pathway resurfaced with tarmac, through no interception on my part I add. However, the gas contractor seems to have forgotton the prime factor in this whole operation in that the object of the exercise was to replace my gas main and reinstate my gas supply. I am still without both, with the gas meter sitting in the hallway surrounded by the bits of disconnected pipework. The contractor who reinstates the roadworks is not the same contractor who carries out the gas work. A classic case of the mushroom syndrome or left and right hands come to mind. If this is an example of how our utilities carry out their works it is no small wonder we are paying extortionate rates for our gas!!
To be continued I hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -

But it is not the gas supplier who is replacing the pipes, they do not own them the gas networks do, and it is them who appoint the contractors to do the work.
Basically you call gas suppliers and they will politely tell you not their problem and refer you the national grid regardless of which network owns the pipes so it would be a wasted call.
How ever one point if any compensation is paid or due it does come via the gas supplier as it will be paid by the network to them and then the supplier issues it to you as their customI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -

As you are still without supply then you need to contact the contractors - cannot recall off hand if you come under National Grid or Southern Gas networks but call the national grid on 0)845 605 6677 if it is not their area they will give you the enquiries number for the correct network.
One question did the engineers leave a calling card saying they wanted access to the property?
Just for the record the men or woman that fill in the holes are different from the engineers that work in the installations, as the engineers need certain qualifications that differ from reinstatement teams.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
