RBS is changing it's basic account from SOLO to Visa Debit.
This can happen anytime, from the 15th August 09 onwards.

You should be able to find out here, or from RBS themselves, as their website should be updated to reflect the change.

I think this may be a hint to when visa electron my cease being in circulation looks like July 2011.

I could totally be barking up the wrong tree though.

Good guess - but the date on that website simply refers to when banks are no longer allowed to the the old Visa / Electron logos.

By July 11, all cards should have the new Visa logo.

Afraid you have misread it, what it is saying is the old style Visa Electron card with Visa and curved line and Electron written on it will be valid until 2011 and then all Electron cards must show the new format i.e. Visa flag with Electron written underneath it.

As an aside unemobossed cards are being phased in worldwide, in the last 2 years both visa and mastercard unembossed have been launched in the USA and Canada, which are "electronic use only", you can check this by Goggling it.

From the banks point of view and the faster technology moves at they want all transaction done on-line so they can make the decision about whether you go overlimit/overdrawn themselves rather than you making the decision. To do this the cards dont need embossed (it is better if they are not, why we are going the other way I dont knw), in fact you dont even need a card now that contactless card technology is being put into mobile phones.

Also worth noting these 'Visa Debits' are still electronic use only, even when away from Electron - in that they will be classified as 'full authorisation' cards meaning that if the merchant processing is offline, the card will be declined. For instance on board a train or plane or even at Tesco Pay-at-Pump.

So in essence they are still 'electron' in that electronic only, but unlike electron they can also be swiped, say at a car hire store - also using the old swipe systems which would not work for Electron....

  • Halifax/BoS have recently changed some accounts that original only came with Visa Electron cards (namely 'Cardcash' accounts) to another account ('Current Account') that comes with a Visa Debit card. From what I gather new cards will only be sent out when the existing one expires!
The Cardcash account was withdrawn to those 18+ quite sometime ago, if I recall many have changed to the 'Easycash' account which is now the replacement for 18+ Cardcash. Those few who have been moved 'up' to the Current Account will now have a Visa Debit card.
I work for Halifax (a division of Bank of Scotland plc, owned by HBOS plc, owned by Lloyds Banking Group plc). Any comments or views are my personal comments and opinions and not those of my employer. Oh and I might (on the odd occasion) get something wrong, if I do then I do apologise in advance!!

    Hi

I was wondering if you could explain this more fully.

Are they phasing out the Easycash account and changing it to a current account with a 2-in-1 debit card, or is this just for certain customers.

If so can anyone apply for the "current account" you described separately, is this an account below (in terms of meeting a credit score) the Reward account or is it the Reward account.
