British Airways Strike !

Could someone give me some advice. I am flying to Croatia with my g/f on 10th Aug for 6 days. I have pre paid for the hotel in advance and it was a serious amount of money.

The possible BA strike comes right after the 14 day cooling off period, which means that my flight to Dubrovnik could be cancelled or possibly my return flight to London.

I'm struggling to understand how the insurance issues relating to my hotel booking. If they cancel my flight out, can i claim back my hotel fees ? If they cancel my flight back, who pays for the extra hotel cost i wasn't expecting to have?

I'm very concerned about this and i'm thinking of trying to get flights on another carrier to be safe, but i shouldn't have to do that.

Any Help would be appreciated !

The Times reports on the continued fall out between British Airways and the unions. One reader points out in the "Comments Section" that large wages for short haul Airbus Captains that are much higher than the industry rate, all adding to the huge cash shortage for the airline.

The article also points that British Airways ground crew staff are about to register a "failure to agree" through their unions.

It looks like any delay in these processes will only add the BA's problems as the capital leaks will take longer to plug. The unions are attacking from all sides and for 14 days nothing will happen. What a waste of time.

Talks between British Airways and Unite, the union, have broken down. Failure of the negotiations, aimed at breaking the deadlock over the airline’s plans to cut thousands of jobs and freeze pay, means that both sides must now abide by a 14-day cooling off period during which time there is no external communication.

A company deadline of June 30 passed without agreement and the conciliation service Acas has been involved in talks between the two sides for the past few weeks.

BA said in a statement tonight: “Unite has today registered a failure to agree in the cabin crew talks. A failure to agree involves a 14 day cooling off period during which time there will be no external communications.

“This period is for both sides to reflect on where they are and explore ways of resolving matters.”

The union made no comment tonight but officials are known to have grown frustrated at the lack of progress during the talks after Unite put forward its own proposals for saving money including cabin crew agreeing to a pay cut.

It is understood a similar “failure to agree” will be registered tomorrow on behalf of other BA workers, including baggage handlers and check-in staff.

  • A strike will take much longer to organize.they have to give notice for a start, and that's after a ballot which could take a while. Travel expert Simon Calder said that it wouldn't be til the end of august and that was before the talks began. They also usually pick the bank holiday. I understand your concerns as we are also travelling with ba in august but you should be fine
