We (used to) keep bees.... check in the yellow pages under beekeepers and I think you shloudl be able to find a contact from your local club (if not, check the phone book - it's so they can come and remove local swarms)
They should be able to help you get into it......0 -
Contact your local beekeepers association. They are used to dealing with novice beekeepers and will offer someone experienced to mentor you.
They can often set you up with a colony - you may even get an existing colony, complete with a hive

An older thread that may be of some help is in the link:-

Hi Zziggi,
Another old thread that may help. To bee or not to bee, that is the question?
Good luck with your course.

I've got bees, I love them dearly but have to practice a fairly low intervention beekeeping after becoming very allergic to them over a couple of years. I don't let that stop me, but its well worth getting a recent bee suit, helps with the confidence no end
Bees don't always want to do what beekeepers want them to do, mine currently have a small queen who insists on creeping through the queen excluder to lay in the supers. Must try to sort that out this year or no honey for us again
