Hello there,
I was recently tricked into renewing a mobile phone contract with three. I wrote to them to say I had a new account with them set up with phones for you and I wanted to end the old one as the time was up on it anyway. I also phoned them to arrange it being cancelled. I got them to repeat "It is now cancelled". Hoever they offered me a new handset as goodwill for me apparently being a customer with 3 for a couple of years....of course I accepted.
Phone arrived, was rubbish and cheap but I thought hey its free!! never really looked at the letter that came with it. Anyway noticed my account was still being debited for the old account. I thought this was strange so phoned three...they said I had agreed to renewing my contract and thats what the hanset was for. I explained what the Indian gentleman had told me but to no avail....The language barrier couldnt have even caused this as I wrote and clearly stated I wished to end the account. They have refused to cancel and now I am paying 2 accounts each month.
I am furious and feel very cheated. Anyone else had this experience? and what can be done...surely they cant legally start a new contract over the phone anyway?

You weren't tricked. Why did you accept a new handset when you were phoning to cancel? A new handset is an upgrade therefore starting you off on another 18 month contract. You should really have read the letter and you would then have realised what you had done. Can't understand why you are now being charged for two accounts though.
A contract can be agreed over the phone. The ball started rolling the minute you agreed to a new handset. You need to call them again, unfortunately, to find out why they are charging you for two accounts.0 -
"I wrote to them to say I had a new account with them set up with phones for you"
That's why they're paying for 2 accounts.0 -
You could ask them to provide a transcript of the call to prove the contract.0
