grrrrr!
i'm a bit hard of hearing so we have subtitles on TV, it comes through the digital TV box rather than teletext, i don't know if that means it's different people writing the subtitles or not, i'm not very technical lol!
anyway, today the TV was on and just before 5pm a clip from 'the office' was shown. somebody said 'why don't you f*** off' and the f word was beeped out on the TV, but the subtitles spelled it out! my 8 year old asked me what it meant and was it a swear word!! while some of you may be more surprised that he'd not heard the word in the school playground before now than at channel 4 he honestly hadn't heard this word before today but now he can spell it and realises it's a swear word. lovely ... i'm not happy :-(

My 7 year old asked me what the F and C word were. She had heard them in school but didn't know what they meant. She could spell the F word word so I explained it was a derogatory word for sex. Panicked over the C word until she spelt out Crap. Told her it meant poo and she was happy.

within weeks of starting reception my 4 year old called his 1 year old sister a dirty s**g
i was mortified - the only explanation i can think of (cos its not a term we use ::)) is that a lot of children in his year have teenage brothers.
he's never called her it again0 -

Hi BB
The subtitles on analogue and digital are the same.
I'm guessing you were watching THE 100 GREATEST CHRISTMAS MOMENTS? This was originally shown after the 9pm watershed on Friday, when the f word was probably not bleeped. It sounds like they edited the programme for its pre-watershed showing, but forgot to change the subtitles. It may be worth you contacting Channel 4 to express your displeasure

Bunny, kids are gonna hear it and ask regardless. Better it's at home than in the playground where your child is repeating it for weeks 'til you find out!!
To be honest, I don't want to hear or read it either but you can guarantee that if they blanked it out, there would be an uproar with people saying that how are they supposed to know what it means?!!!
I think you shold have a 'clean' and 'unedited' version to go with the program. It makes sense.Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you![/SIZE]0 -
A mistake in forgetting to edit the subtitles before the re-broadcast at the pre-watershed time, but it is a breach of the Ofcom guidelines. It can be reported here if you wanted to.

Have you noticed how in pre-watershed broadcasts, some of the channels are now pixelating out the mouth of someone who is swearing, just in case you can lip read. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
hi all,
we weren't actually watching the programme, just channel hopping. i knew he'd have to hear words like that eventually, before high school i suppose but if he'd used that word at primary school he'd have been in serious trouble and he honestly would have been the only child in the school who used it, his school is really strict. i'm just glad he's 8 and not 5 or 6, too immature to realise how frowned upon swearing is at his school. he has asked about words before that he's heard at school or from my brother's girlfriend but that particular word is one of the most revolting in my opinion.
as it is, because it's a word associated with sex he thinks it's revolting, he doesn't want to think about it, it's bad enough that his mum's pregnant lol!! but there could have been 5 year olds reading it, that would be horrible :-(52% tight0 -

might be pretty easy to spot if they do.. or at least if somebody said 'f off you w'er'. Pretty easy to guess what they'd use.0

sis says they spell everything after the 9pm watershed but use asterisks beforehand if something's bleeped out (for example on 'trisha'). as long as you can see the asterisks you don't need to know what the actual word is, the swearing in itself would be enough to convey the general tone and frame of mind of the person doing the swearing. she's never seen a signed programme that included swearing.52% tight0
