What to to do with tough roasted beef?

Options
Hi everyone,

i've just had a pretty disappointing roast beef dinner - I asked someone to pick me up some 21 day old beef from sainsbury's but they ended up bringing me 2kg of silverside. i tried to slow roast it in the oven but it was still chewy and unnappealing.

Anyway, I have a load of cooked meat which I don't really want to waste and was just wondering if you had any ideas on what I should use it up in.

Thanks, oh wise OS'ers!

Do you have a slow cooker? i would prob put it in the SC and make a stew or casserole. Or you could use a blender, and mince it up and then make it into a spag bol or something like that!!!

Good answer, mince it up and make a cottage pie.

Tart it up a bit, add some minced onion, a splash of garlic or Worcester sauce, it's never a lost cause!!!

Yep, I bought some of that by mistake. Put it in the SC with some mushrooms, peppers, onion, carrots and celery & red wine and cooked for 12 hours while out at work. Result - Most amazing beef stew ever. Great with rice. Good luck!

give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • I was going to suggest covering it with a gravy and cook it very slowly in the oven on a low heat. This should soften it but the slow cooker idea is so much better!

You cannot mince meat in a blender, you would get meat slurry...you have to mince it in a mincer;)
I would do a stew or a bolognese sauce, or a pie, cottage pie maybe. I like steak and kidney but oh doesnt like offal.
    Also chilli, curry, lasagne, enchiladas...

I would suggest you complain to Sainsbury's. It happened to me once and it was a real disappointment as we had people to dinner.

I was refunded the cost of the meat (I think I just took back the price tag from the back) but I think I should have complained a bit more because it did spoil the meal. I had spent such a long time in preparation although my guests obviously said it didn't matter.

That was my thought - but the Supermarkets don't help as they often sell silverside as a roasting joint. It can be roasted, kind of - but it needs hours and hours ... long & slow and plenty of liquid or basting.

Best use for cooked silverside is to mince it and use it in a cottage pie.

You can mince with a processor if you're careful. I mince using a Magimix, but you need to use the pulse option otherwise you'll end up with ground meat!
