If he were a dog I'd be saying he's guarding, maybe he knows that something not nice is close by (Fox,Badger)

Dunno much about cats though so, to echo those above, get him checked by your vet to be sure.

Do cats do the guarding thing?

Yes they do. One of my cats guarded the cat flap with his life when I had a female in season. Was cute! RIP Tigger (car accident)
Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)

cats definatly guard - my boy created merry hell one evening - turned out i'd not locked the door - - once door was locked he was back upstairs & curled up on the bed before i was!

ditto view on cystitus, my girl had it once, bless her she was so uncomfortable!

i would say vet visit is due - sounds like cystitis or something similar. my little girl cat got it and she acted similar to how your describe. good luck, keep us posted!

ps - there is absolutely nothing wrong with a man crying! you are human, just like us ladies - it is so unfair that men are made to feel bad about crying x

My neutured male cat had very similar symptoms, in and out of tray, looking like he was trying to scent on everything, crying, and oddly sitting on carrier bags. He had crystals in his urine which were blocking his urinary tract - vet required to unblock, medication and a special diet for a while.

p.s. he had a milder version before hand, which was diagnosed as cystitis and treated with metacam. It then reoccured and turned into a blockage.

    Get to the vets!!!
If you haven't been already, his behaviour sounds like a urinary infection, which in male cats can be down to a build up of crystals in the urine, and bladder, and can lead to a blocked urethra, which is a veterinary emergency and requires immediate treatment.
Let us know how he gets on

Really? I've always looked at cats as aloof, independent little geezers :)

I'm a bit surprised to be honest but you live & learn, thanks for the replies.
