What on earth is wrong with my cat, please help!

Hi, im sorry if this post sounds melodramatic, but I really am at my wits end. I have a black and white tom cat, he's 5 years old, and he really is the light of my life, I love him so much and this is worrying me sick to the stage its had me in tears, and im a 26 year old man!

Since I had him last year, he has been such a good cat, doing his business outside 90% of the time, having the odd winge when he cant get his own way, but after going out for a bit he would come in, have a wash and then nod off on the back of the sofa, and he loved nothing more than a fuss. Last week, all of a sudden, he started getting really restless, always on pins, eyes wide and darting about like theres no tomorrow, and howling like he's in pain! But, all of a sudden he calms down and seems to go back to his normal self for half an hour, but then the same saga repeats. He wont leave the yard, he seems to "keep guard" by the back gate and does the howling, and he is ALWAYS in his litter tray, he's literally in and out every 10 mins, does a tiny little wee and jumps out again. earlier in the week he peed in an empty washing basket! He seems healthy, he is eating normally, if anything more of a gannet than usual, same with the drinking of water. He has changed so much and I cant seem to help him, I feel terrible in case he's ill but I cant for the life of me tell how! He was a rescue cat this time last year, and he has been spayed, could be being bullied by another cat? There is another cat he has had spats with before but it hasnt affected his behaviour! Or in season? Please help if you can.

It's could be a urine infection get a vets appointment ASAP.
Keep access to water at all times.
    Hope he gets better soon.
slowly going nuts at the world:T
  • I'd say get him to the vet asap too, the in and out of the litter tray sounds like he may have an infection or developed crystals that can block their tubes. Let us know how you get on.

Ditto, he may have a real and painful problem and you need to get him to a vet asap.

I thought of urine infection too. Best phone the Vet to get the cat checked.

Symptoms - Signs of a cat urinary tract infection include but are not limited to; urinating outside of the box, urinating in sinks or bathtubs, crying in the litter box, frequent urination in tiny amounts, straining to urinate (may be confused with constipation), bloody urine, and some cats will lick themselves. If your cat is straining without producing urine your cat could be blocked, this is a medical emergency and without prompt veterinary care your cat will die from a build up of toxins.

Sorry forgot to say, he's always scenting too, always rubbing up against us and the furniture, would that suggest anything?

  • my cat had similar symptoms a couple of months ago but ive got a female cat whos 15 months old and stays indoors... she was in and out of the cat litter and after doing some digging on the web realised it could be a urine infection so at 1 o clock in the morning after reading all the scare stories on the web i took her to the vet who confirmed she had an infection and told me it was good i took her in as worst case scenario it can kill them i dont mean to worry you but get him checked out!!

If he were a dog I'd be saying he's guarding, maybe he knows that something not nice is close by (Fox,Badger)

Dunno much about cats though so, to echo those above, get him checked by your vet to be sure.

Do cats do the guarding thing?

A urinary tract infection can sometime be kicked off by stress but the most pressing thing is to get the cat to the vet's asap. Like right now or very first thing in the morning, it sounds like your darling is in pain and has been for some time
  • I'm for the cystitis option too. A way of easing the sting (which I am sure 98% of us girls know all about) is to use a Johnson's baby wipe or damp flannel just to go over his wotsit. He'll probably still moan but it does make them a bit more comfortable until you can get him to the vet.

A male cat cannot be spayed or in season! lol it sounds like Cystitis & males can become blocked so he needs a vet today it's urgent if he does have a blockage. I'm shocked you haven't taken him to the vet already or even called them! Hope he's ok
