Declined for a Tesco Clubcard credit card

Hi,

I got declined for one of these a few weeks ago. I did an online app. and stated that I had 5 or 6 'charge' cards. Not sure what these refer to, but since I have about 5 or 6 debit cards, most of which are fairly inactive, I stated that number. Shouldn't I have said that ?>?

I am thinking that this could have been the reason that I was declined. I also am not on the electoral roll at the address I reside at, so was thinking that could have been something to do with it, too. How do I go about sorting that with the electoral roll, folks...?

Should I wait until the end of the year until I apply for another credit card ? I have a Halifax card with 2K limit and have a £300 balance. Have another 3 months interest free on it. Paying a whack off this every month will increase my credit score a bit, yes ? Am hoping to have that paid off by end of August.

Thanks.

If you have 5 or 6 why do you want more?

when you get the letter that states you have been declined you can call and ask them to re look at your info, you have to send statements of etc.

My ex got knocked back a few weeks ago, but he was told it was not due to his credit score (he owed me money and was trying to pay it back) he was refused as he is now living with his parents but the mortgage here is still in his name as is sky as he is still in contract and his parents already have sky - he sent in bank statements and a letter explaining why the 'errors' are on his report - they accepted him after that - and i got what he owed me!

so, if you feel the info may be incorrect it may be worth chasing it up - they can change their minds

You see, this is what I didn't understand. I have only the one credit card (Halifax), but have 5 or so debit / current accounts. Is this what a "charge card" is ??

This information would only be used if it could be verified independently via the CRAs, so I doubt whether that's the problem.

Much more likely, IMO. Everyone's credit rating improves no end once registered.

Forms are sent to all residents and borough-wide audits are undertaken annually in August. The electoral register is then updated in October.

It's also possible to enrol each month from early December until mid-August, using the rolling register procedure. If you type "electoral roll" and the name of your council into google, you'll be directed to the relevant pages on your local authority website. Most include an explanation of how the register is compiled and when your name will appear.

Some council websites are set up so you can register online or download a form or you can ring the electoral services department of your local council during business hours.

Once registered, you may have to contact your council to ask when the credit reference agencies are next updated, as frequency varies between boroughs ;)

To me, a charge card is something more like a Diners Club or old-style Amex; in other words, a card which acts just like a credit card, expect you must pay back the balance in full each month, and with no credit limit:

    http://www.apacs.org.uk/payment_options/charge_cards.html

This is different from a debit card, where there is no credit (revolving or short-term) involved at all as you must have the money in your account to pay.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a factor in the decline; you could argue that Tesco's should have checked against the credit agencies, but I'm not sure they could rely on their agency showing all cards.

If you still want the card, I'd give them a ring and say you think you may have made a mistake; there's nothing to lose

    Cheers

Absolutely, there's no harm in asking.

If you ring Tesco Finance on 0800 505 555 , you'll avoid the perishing 0870/0845
    numbers ;)
