    Maybe it's about early adopters.

Lets face it, anything has to be better than Vista, I tried it, I very soon went back to XP.

    Vista was slow and cumbersome.

I will stay with XP as long as I can.

I installed 7 RC1 the other day - the pull? I have a new PC -64bit processor and 4gb of ram - seemed stupid to waste this by installing XP.

I've since installed and set up everything without fault (and much faster than XP), so I don't see why I'd go back. There are a few pretty bits that warrant a £50 outlay to upgrade from XP, so I preordered too.

The more code there is the more chance there is of it having vulnerabilities.

An efficiently written operating system will perform better on any level of hardware and will probably have less errors and vulnerabilities - bloatware indicates slipshop coding.

The priority for any software developer should be to ensure the correct methodology and techniques are applied to any software that is being produced. Depending on what is to be achieved dictates how much coding that requires, whether it's a small amount or a massive amount. Making a sweeping statement that less actual code essentially equals efficient and secure programs is incorrect, because it necessarily doesn't.

I've ordered it as I tend to build my PC(s) from scratch/separate components when upgrading which obviously don't come pre-installed with an OEM version of windows like store bought computers.

Also buying it as a 'retail' version it has fewer licensing restrictions and you can 'take it with you' when you upgrade/move to a new PC (OEM versions have more restricted license agreements, essentially you're stuck with it on the PC you get it on and need to buy a 'new' copy each time for your next system).

In short I bought it now as I'll probably need it in future (when its £80+) and will hopefully save me money having a retail version in the long run.

If you always buy your PCs built for you by dell etc probably don't 'need' it till XP/vista or whatever you have now becomes completly unsupported (leaving discussion of 'open source OSs asidde for now :p). and /or you'll have upgraded by then and get Win7 preinstalled on your new PC.

'Vista' was also criticised as being a bit of a hog on system resources. -It has a much bigger overhead than XP as it tried to do more with sidebars and other 'fluff' leaving less processor time available for any actual programs you might have wanted to run on your PC. Microsoft are allegedly making Win 7 more lightweight/efficient however how successful they'll be on that front remains to be seen ;)
