Need to furnish new property - where to buy?

Hi folks
In the proces of purchasing a brand new flat for myself, have finally got the mortgage but had to put down £23,750 for the deposit! In light of this the cash I did have set aside to furnish the property is considerably low!
I know there are sales on just about everywhere but I was just wondering if there was anywhere that you bargain hunters had noticed that has exceptionally good deals on.
I will probably go to DFS for my sofa... do they have a particular sale that is better than another?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Freecycle and Ikea.
One's pot luck and the other is cheap and cheerful and perfectly functional (some of it is really surprisingly good - wardrobes spring to mind), and you can replace it with decent stuff at your leisure.0 -

School-boy error there! :rotfl:
I'd be looking at Freecycle first of all then Ebay, buying MDF/foam furniture now is a false economy as you'll be chucking it all away in a couple of years and starting again.
Consider searching out Edwardian era/Sheraton revival furniture; it look fine in the most modern of flats and was properly made.0 -
You can get a sofa from DFS on 0% deals, just make sure you can afford to pay it off within the 0% period otherwise you will get slapped with all of the interest.
As for furniture, when I bought my new place I bought a few bits from Ikea (very reasonable for a nice bed) I also spent a lot of money on furniture which is this laminated woodchip crap and I can't stand it.
So what I have started doing is going around auctions and car boot sales and have been picking up some gorgeous real wood furniture for very cheap prices! Bit of sanding and re-staining and the peices have turned out great. And real wood furniture lasts hell of a long time!
And not to mention, if any peices are antique, then if you look after them, they will increase in value with time, so you can sell in future for profit!0 -
Try your local auction house. Ours this week has approx 4 leather suites in it and countless white goods for the kitchen. You can upgrade your items as and when you save enough.
Most places have sales on at this time of year and if you see something you like, don't be afraid to ask for a discount

Go to the auctions. You'll get some bargains for proper wood etc and not just flat packed rubbish. And DFS for a sofa - have you actually sat on any of there sofas? Yet to find one that is vaguely comfortable...0

You obviously didn't read the other posts on here...

Agree with the auction / car boot route.
Why on earth buy new, poorly made expensive furniture which will only survive a short length of time before it either falls apart or goes out of 'fashion'?
Our house is furnished with auction bargains; leather chesterfields for £50, real yew dining table £15, chest of drawers £10......need I go on?"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -
Try having a look for local charities that take in, renovate and resell furniture while teaching people a trade.0

Hi, if i were you my friend i would steer well clear of DFS at all costs. have a search for my post in this forum, under 'another dfs nightmare', see for yourself that they make sub-standard furniture, and care very little for your opinion or concerns post sale.
Do a bit of research, find somewhere that will appreciate your custom and be transparent about their terms and conditions.
Good luck

DFS... not too sure about them. If you see a sofa and chairs there that you love then fair enough but don't kid yourself that you're getting any kind of a bargain in an actual real "sale".
IKEA are good - plan to buy a lot from there myself real soon now. Also take a look at the cashback websites, quidco and the like. If you can find a firm who offers cash back through a website like that and who have a showroom near you, go to the showroom, pick out the stuff you like, order it online via the cashback site and er, get cash back. Just the ticket when money is tight.
Don't disregard auctions and charity shops either as people have said. At least take a look at them!If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0
