I think there are places (might even be DVLA) that you can pay and trace car index numbers - quite easy to do, so that's how they would have found you.

Yes, but they would have been looking at the old licence no. which equates to the old address.

I think nothing more can be done until the OP posts the letter/form. Sounds very like a PPC letter the more I look at it.

I think a clue may be found in where the money is to be sent.

If this is indeed a PPC, they should be reported immediately since I suspect the letter breaks many laws and regulations.

Who does it say you have to make payment to? Name & address please.

Excellent post, as was the same from oldone. Very pertinent.

A bit of caution cos the amount could quite possibly be the result of a fine under criminal legislation -- RTRA 1984. Personally, I'm doubting it along with everyone else.

And then it goes on about the right of appeal within 10 days.

    That bit.

If it was criminal legislation then what right of appeal would there possibly be at this stage?? None as far as I know.

However, since OP likes the word 'can't' it is impossible to advise. Typed as written??? Really ''then it goes on about ----''. Yeah right, that's what's actually written is it?

Who'd have thought that the only scanner in the world would suddenly be not working!

Thank you all for your posts and advice. I didn't really consider the possibility it might be a scam but, if it's not, I've more than happy to pay it. I shall have another tinker with the printer/scanner in a moment or use a camera (thanks for that idea!).

Neil B - it's not so much a case of liking the word 'can't'. I did type the letter pretty much as is written but didn't bother with completing it word for word in terms of the appeal section but, I can assure you, I have included 80% (ish) word for word - mainly just omitting the part that said we had the right to appeal within 10 working days.

To quote one of your other posts:

"The OP made a statement of events as he recalled. If you can't take that at face value and show the respect that all posters deserve then **** off."

I will gladly post the original and will block out our details asap. Thanks all.

The problem with having to type a copy instead of scanning it is the temptation to omit some phrases or words as they seem unimportant or part of standard wording. The devil is in the detail and only slight changes can modify the intent of a form to the point of nullifying it. It will be very helpful if you could copy the letter whenever possible, Neil is one of the most experienced posters here, and can usually spot a "wrong 'un" quickly.

People here are prepared to help you, but cannot till you give us the details requested.

Why won't you at least give us the address of the "court" sending you the letter?

All easily answered without the need for a scanner... makes me wonder why we bother!
