How much to send roughly 4kg to Australia?

Something I'm selling on ebay is currently at £18 but the current highest bidder is in Australia. Postage quoted is £15 to the UK & I've put overseas bidders to get a postage quote but this person hasn't so far. Item ends tomorrow so I would like to know how much postage to charge if this person wins. It's just under 4kg without packaging so could easily go just over when packaged up in a cardboard box. I can't seem to figure it out online at Royal Mail & the PO today weren't much help.

  • P.S Think it would probably be best to have it signed for but I don't know how much insurance to put on it - to be it's pretty worthless so would you make sure it was covered upto the buyer's price for it?

The maximum weight is 2kg, so you'll not be able to send it via Royal Mail unless it's an item you can split up into two or more packages.
  • Lady in PO today said it could be sent but wouldn't be able to go Airmail, but she couldn't give me the price without actually weighing the item (I don't have a car so wasn't able to take it with me). I don't want to send Surface Mail as it would take too long so she said International Signed For but couldn't give the price.

I would also wait and speak with your local post office before quoting your buyer. Please don't be suprised if your bidder fails to pay or says postage too high. This seems to happen alot.
Accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.
  • You won't be able to send the parcel via Royal Mail International Signed-For as that is only valid for up to 2 KG.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.
  • Buyer is on 323 Feedback 100% so I'm hoping that is a good sign. I can't take the parcel to the PO until I post it as it's too heavy for me & I'm not paying over £5 in Taxi fares just to get it weighed!

You also can't send it surface mail. Again, there's a 2kg limit.
  • You're going to have to find an alternative to Royal Mail. I think it's going to end up being extremely expensive.

  • What's the difference between International Signed For & International Datapost? Is the latter option I need?

Yes, it looks like that will be the case. Parcelforce quotes a price of £47.45 on 4kg with a timescale of 42-61 days. Looks like it'll be very expensive and/or very slow.
