My solar PV first year payback calculation

It's quite hard to find specific info in this thread.. it's too lively.
I may have missed this part along my way but I have what i consider to be a sensible question not covered already...how much if at all has installing these panels added to the value of the home ? It's got to add something hasn't it, considering that anyone buying from you would also benefit from savings for years to come?
If you paid out 5k roughly and they added 5k value..then you're quids in really aren't you?

Absolutely, just as if you were to get a home improvement loan to build an extra room in the roof, an extension, a conservatory, this would always be factored in when the estate agent values it. when you sell a house a HIPs pack is required and if your house is rated as an 'A' it is likely to sell easier than an identical house rated as a 'C' or 'D'. What is happening in Scotland is the govenment are now giving out low interest loans to purchase this technology and you get the grant too.....oh and the feed in tarrif. if we are to become less reliant on fossil fuels and not have to import as much from volatile countries, then the people who can install these systems (grant assisted) should be rewarded as they will be helping all of us from the ever rising fuel prices / power cuts. There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

TWO SIMPLE QUESTIONS...but ones that solar advocates seem completely unable to answer...........
Would you recommend solar to anyone at the moment, and if so on what financial grounds/evidence??0 -
yes, BFG, I probably would. There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

I am a solar advocate, I would recommend Solar PV to anyone.
We have worked out that the approximate payback is ten years (even building in loss of interest on savings, maintenance, depreciation etc) which is a good home improvement.
Solar PV is proven to be green, reliable, unobtrusive and virtually maintenance free.
The UK is about to gain a feed-in-tariff and between now and then you'll get a £2500 grant (you'll need to buy a fair sized system to get the full £2500).
Other benefits include not having to worry about switching suppliers, being able to send cold callers away with a flea in their year when they "guarantee to undercut your current supplier", and avoiding the inevitable penalties when the UK fails (miserably) to hit its green targets.
Question answered? Or do we really have to go round and round and round yet again?0 -

With respect, you may have worked out a 10 year payback, but I don't think you have given any supportable figures to support that contentention.
I contend 20 years is a far more realistic figure.
Even leaving aside the maths, all of these calculations assume that the system will run trouble free for 10 or 20 years.
Obviously the panels themselves have little to go wrong - albeit the output drops off with age. However the system guarantee is only 2 years.
As someone said earlier, would you be confident that 'made in China' goods on a roof, (mountings, cables, plugs and sockets etc) exposed to British weather will stand the test of time? Not to mention all the electronics!0 -

Virtually nothing to do with my panels has made in China written on it. The panels were made in Wrexham (about 10 miles frrom my house). The remainder of the electronics are German. There may be some wires, connectors that are made elsewhere - including China.
Saying that though, most things we buy are made in China - its a fact, whether you like it or not. And I do have faith in them.0 -
I have a spreadsheet for my calculations, but as I don't have a website, I don't think people could view it.
Please could someone PM me if you are willing to host the spreadsheet on your website, and post a link to it on this forum (i'll take responsibility for any innacuracies - if there are any I may need to update the spreadsheet)
Thanks
Edit: Sorted, thanks0 -
