Are French cars really that bad?

It should be noted that the only " French " car in the top ten is a Citroen C1, which is actually a Toyota Aygo in reality.

Doesn't make it Japanese, though. The C1, Peugeot 107 and Aygo are all built in the same factory in Slovakia. The C1 is always the best option as the dealers give better discounts.
I have read the new Which car reports. They are not always representative in my view, because of the demographics of the contributors. (Read the comments on the Rover 75 to see what I mean!)0 -
peugeot and citroen come above vw and audi for reliability for example
i run citroens and have taken them above 280 thousand miles with out any problems other than wear and tear and a dodgy bosch (generic part in many cars) fuel pump0 -
As my maths teacher use to say there are lies, damn lies and statistics. These surveys are like that, not scientific simply are random poll with random outcomes.
I would have it a guess the French are good on mechanicals and average on build quality and electrics but buy no means poor. If they were poor they would have gone the same way as rover. I also think peugeot/citroen are more superior to Renault and more simply designed for maintenance compared to Renault.
In these surveys a bit of psychology comes into play, e.g. a person who buys a Mercedes will find it more difficult to admit they have bought a lemon as they not want to think they been ripped off. However give the same person a French car as ask him to change the oil every year and no doubt they will happily tell the survey how expensive French cars are to maintain.
Finally i think a bit of Anglo French rivalry i.e. lets have a go at everything French-
e.g. how useless are their nuclear power plants, not a patch on ours!0 -
My experience isn;t exactly extensive, but I had one that was an erratic starter (electrics) and FIL bought one brand new, by 6 years old it really was falling apart with basically the whole car's engine needing replacing. I certainly wouldn't by a Renault at any rate.0

I've owned Peugeot, Fiat, Skoda (Favorit not a "VW" one), Vauxhall, VW, Talbot (Samba), Rover, Jaguar, even FSO, they've all started, and, apart from the FSO, they all stopped, (and even that did eventually).
None cost more than the other for spares, none really needed any. I abused them all, and still do. If the price is right, French cars are as good as german, or british, or italian, or even wherever FSO were made.0 -
Would you buy a car made in a nation that drove around in mobile corrugated tin
sheds until a couple of years ago?0
