hi all im fairly new to all this, and having read this whole thread am inspired but feeling more stupid as it goes on!
Lots of places selling all thier gardening things off cheap now, got a £3 mimi greenhouse and 30 litres compost for £1.50. But have no idea what i can grow at this time of year, is it too late for all fruit and veg, or can i start some things now? sorry for being dumb never had a garden before, will be growing in bags or pots this year but hoping to persuade OH to dig up some of the garden for next year. thanks all:rolleyes:SAHM getting organised 2010.

Don't grow lettuce indoors this time of year it will be too warm for them on a window sill, they prefer it cooler, and germinate quicker and grow better in a cooler spot. You can't have everything....where would you put it?0

Wasn't sure where to post this
Our runner beans have been doing really well in a couple of tubs but now they seem to have slowed down.Recently, we've been able to pick a good crop every other day but its been a few days now since any were big enough to pick. Is there a reason for this or does this sometimes just happen ?Mary

Has it been as cold and wet with you as it has been here in Yorkshire? That'd slow me down for sure LOL0

Yes it has, apart from the odd day...........last night the rain woke me up but we've had none since then............bit on the chilly side though.Mary

Well we harvested some of our Duke of York & Maris Peer potatoes from the pots - made fabulous saut!s for dinner with the leg of lamb!
The tumbler tomatoes are doing well in our strawberry planter too! Being up on the patio means they are ripening faster than the ones in the growbags around the raised beds.
We have been doing well on our raised beds too - Chard, yellow and green courgettes, french beans, runner beans. The butternut squash over the arch is doing really well too - two fruit so far and growing by the day! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

You can still sow the oriental greens now and I think they will be okay in pots/bags or windowboxes, eat the smaller leaves raw in salads or when bigger stir fry them briefly with garlic and ginger. Most should be ready within 8 weeks or less, quickest would be saisai leaf radish (2-3 weeks for first cutting) and mustard spinach (komatsuna) ready in about a month. As well as those you could try Texel greens, Green in snow, Tatsoi, Lambs lettuce (corn salad), rocket etc...
Some more ideas of veg to sow now here (in amongst the flowers!):

For some ideas of places to get seeds try :

Am I too late to grow potatoes if I want to do it inside? I'd quite like to have my own for Christmas dinner. I have a large, deep planter I'm planning on doing it in, should that make any difference.October Wins: Skin care cream exclusive to Harrods, £50 Amazon voucher, bottle of Bacardi Oakheart.0

OK.....the mini greenhouse is in situ & the seeds are sown. We've had heavy squalls & it's not been that warm either so.....when do you recommend I either 'open' the flap or remove the cover to expose the soil to the elements please?
I had feared the seeds would have drowned in last night's deluge, but it also seems silly to take water from the tap when so much is falling from the sky for free:p
