problem with dell tft monitor

  • Hi, if the worst comes to the worst then i just purchased a Digimat 17" TFT from Aria (do a google search) for £127.96, delivered within 20 hours. Very pleased with it, as are a lot of other people on the internet. Comes with a 3-year warranty too. If you buy using a Citi Credit Card then you can get an extra year of warranty for free (have to register it) or a Barclays platinum connect card gives 2 years free.

If you think it's the adapter then this should do the trick.

Make sure that you match the output settings to what it says on the original.
  • I've tried wiggling the lead, if I hold it the monitor stays on but as soon as you take your hand off the monitor goes off.

    It's 12V and 4 amp.

I've taken the cover off and looked inside but tbh I have no idea what I'm looking for. The guy in the local repair shop had a look at it but couldn't fix it. Someone recommended I look on PartMaster but I can't seem to be able to find the correct monitor adaptor.

Ideally I would like to purchase just the adaptor but I guess if it comes to it, it could end up being a new TFT monitor.

Zenmaster: do you think that the adaptor you mentioned will be the one I want?

I seriously doubt that the Maplin adapter you have identified (1200mA) will be powerful enough.

My 15" LCD TV (ok it is a TV not just a monitor) requires 3.33Amps at 12V !

    Hence the questions I asked.

Sadly not :(. I've looked at the adaptor again and it's only 1200mA - you want 4amp. It's just not beefy enough.

There is an FAQ on the page asking just that question and they recommend a different product. Unfortunately that item has been discontinued - but it proves they do exist!

I wouldn't go for a new monitor just yet, unless you are desperate in which case you could hang on to the old one and try and fix it later.

PS. You could try here or here. There also appear to be some on ebay.

    Good luck.

    zenmaster's DEFINITELY WON'T DO !
I've tried wiggling the lead, if I hold it the monitor stays on but as soon as you take your hand off the monitor goes off.
If "wiggling it" makes it work then it sounds like a broken wire or possibly a dry joint (that's effectively a broken connection where a solder joint has failed, usually because of heat and mechanical expansion/contraction)

You need to identify exactly where this break is - if in the cable - by very careful "wiggling" - very gently move or twist a small section at a time making sure that the rest of the cable DOESN'T move !
I'm sure you will find it is where it goes into or comes out of the adapter itself, or the connector that plugs into the monitor.
The guy in the local repair shop had a look at it but couldn't fix it.
I'd find a different repair shop if I were you (if you can't do it yourself) - as this guy doesn't sound as though he's got a clue about what he is doing or what the fault might even be.

If it comes to the worse scenario, send it to me and I'll try and repair it for you !
Or I could get you a suitable adapter from my local electronics shop.

Thank's guys for your help, it's much appreciated.

The eBay link that you provided looks similar to the adaptor I currently have. Maybe I should buy that one.

You reckon it can actually be fixed?

Surely you must know who originally manufactured your monitor ?

If not, look on the back there should be a metal or silver plate with some numbers and other information on, particularly look for the FCCID here or here to see if it yields any information.

If that doesn't do any good, then you could photograph your monitor and I am sure someone shall be able to identify the original manufacturers for you. Otherwise you shall have to approach Dell Parts for a replacement, or alternatively if you post to these forums here and put 'Spare Part Required' in the subject line someone will be able to assist you.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

It obviously works when wiggled/held in the right place - so it is a physical break of some description - you (or someone) needs to find it and repair it.
I've resolved loads of similar problems over the years.

I'll willingly look at it for you if you wish.
