I think i will have to, can't keep him on baby milk forever :D

I had the same problem with both of my two girls, what i did was made up a 7oz bottle of baby milk, topped up with 2oz of cows milk and gradually changed the proportions, they moved to cows milk without noticing.

i hope that works for you

My youngest had this problem and i got very worked up about it!My mom suggested making up normal formula milk and adding 1 ounce cows milk,as she got used to it i changed the amounts so 6 ounces formula and 2 ounces cows milk for a few days then it would be 5 ounces formula and 3 ounces cows milk and so on.
This worked a treat!DD did not notice and i reccomend this mixing to everyone whos child is fussy and does not like cows milk at first.
    hope this has helped!!
    take care
  • The reason the WHO recommend children stayon follow on milk after the age of one is because it is high in iron and children need this still. My son was on formula until 2 and we found the swtich to cow's milk to be very easy. I cannot see the problem with allowing your child to continue with formula until he is two, and give him cow's milk on his cereal etc.

did the WHO recommend follow on milk? i didn't know that. i still use first milk, my baby can't tolerate the extra iron in follow on, besides which the iron he gets from his food is much better for him, it's easily digested when eaten with foods/drinks containing vitamin C (and iron from meat is digested easily anyway). my health visitor actually told me there's no need for follow on milk at all, i can keep baby on first milk until he's a year old. i will probably end up using follow on or growing up milk later on because he's lactose intolerant and you can't really add the lactase enzyme to cows milk or yoghurt etc. because the food would have to be warmed to bady temp then consumed half an hour later. a year old is probably quite young to cut out dairy completely, especially as mine was a late weaner.

but for a baby who can drink cows milk i'd have thought there was no need for follow on, or is my health visitor the only one who thinks follow on is an unecessary gimmick?

It was our health visitor who advised us to go onto cows milk as she said there is no advantage of follow milk so long as they eat a balanced diet, only prob now his poo is yellow! would this be down to the change in milk?

No mine said exactly the same as yours. She said for a child that is getting a balanced diet there was no need for follow-on milk. She also saw it as a marketing gimmick as unlike infant formula you can get deals (eg bogof ,3 for 2)and points on follow on milk.

mine said it was developed because they're not allowed to advertise the first milks anymore. i suppose it could be useful for a vegetarian baby perhaps, and my friend uses it (ready made growing up milk) if her toddler is poorly and doesn't want food. i bought some to try, because i could use my boots points for it. it constipated him, he can manage one bottle a day (he has five 5oz bottles). i'll look into the next stage milk soon, he'll be 9 months in 2 weeks time but if that's as rich then i think we'll stick to first milk (with added lactase) for however long he needs it.

Had no problem with my fisrt child she went straight from breast to follow on milk to cows. Second child had a bad reaction so had to have soy milk but now can take a little goats milk, but my last was a bit of a nightmare i breast feed him to just over a year old and he simply refused any cows milk as a drink but as everyone has said as long as they have a balanced diet it isn't something to really worry about. Plus there are plenty of ways to add it to their food.

My youngest still doesn't like it as a drink and he is almost five but he loves yogurts and cheese and has at least two bowls of cereal in the morning sometimes it is best to relax and if there is one thing i have found with being a mum is that you learn to get really creative LOL
