Baby is refusing cows milk!

My youngest is 12 months and started giving him cows milk in his bottle as advised by hv last week as she said there was no advantage in continuing with follow on milk.

Only prob being he keeps refusing but will take the follow on milk as i am gradually introducing cows milk.

He has also just started to take lumpy foods so i am now giving him what we eat now but before he was getting fruit based purees. I am concerned he will not get enough iron etc as the follow on milk had this already.

Should i keep trying with the cows milk or just stick to follow on?

Thanks

Just stick with the cows milk. Will save you a fortune and if your son is eating a balanced enough diet he will get all the iron he needs.

I found my son drank much more cows milk once he was used to it than he did the months before on formula.

At a year old, Your child could be having very little milk from a bottle/cup and you could instead, give him/her lots of milk based foods instead.(yoghurts, cheeese, rice puddings etc) They can eat a great varied diet and get all the calcium they need.If your child is still having bottles then try a cup of milk, they might drink the cows milk better from it. Better for their teeth as well.If your child is already on a cup and you feel he/she still needs more milk then i would give them the follow on for a bit longer.

you dont need to introduce cows milk if he doesnt like it + theres no point in getting anxious, instead 1 yoghurt a day (1/4 pt equivalent) cheese, custard, milk puddings white savouries all count as their milk intake

also breakfast cereals, make sure they are mixed with cows milk so that he gets used to the taste. i also agree with elaine, try with a beaker/cup rather than a bottle

I have been trying him with a cup but he refuses to take from a cup even with juice. He gets dairy products and i use cows milk in his meals it is when he wants bottle he just refuses it.

    Thanks

you could do the harsh way and just keep giving him cows milk, he'll soon learn your not going to give in and give him any formula lol

as the others have said though, dont panic, as long as your lo is on a varied diet he will get all his nutrients from his food.

    goodluck x

My 1st at 12 months wouldn't take cows milk to start with either. My HV suggested if he had a 8oz bottle to do 7oz formula and 1oz cows milk. If he took that give him that for a few feeds then go to 6oz/2oz and so on.

Took me 3 weeks in total to get him fully on cows milk but it worked

Awww, bless him for wrapping Mum around his lickle finger, clever lad :D

He's not going to develop scurvy/rickets because chances are he's getting a balanced diet anyway. Like the other suggested, cheese, yogs, milky puds, cauli cheese etc will ensure that he's getting enough dairy so nutritionally he's probably doing just fine. However, if like me you like to see some milk going down evening and morning then you'll still feel a bit anxious, especially as warm milk does help little ones to settle.

Have you tried a different type of cup? Really he shouldn't be having any bottles at all at his age but I know that sometimes we give in to things that we know comfort them. An easy flow or as I call them a 'sippy cup' is good as he doesn't have to suck. If he likes to suck then an 'Anywayup cup' is good, especially if he likes to lie down while he has his milk.

Have you varied the temperature of the milk? If he normally has his formula at room temp then try giving him his cows milk a little warmer.

Good luck, they know what buttons to press don't they?
