There are consultations on at the moment about choosing providers but its a few years off yet0

It is further off than "a few years".
Until ALL properties have a water meter installed it is not something that can be done.
It would not be allowed for one company to provided the water for another company to sell it when they have no way of tracking how much is being used.
Water competition will only get a far as commercial properties in the coming years as it is very rare for these not to have a meter.0 -

It is quite unjust that the South West pay so much more than the rest of UK for their water and sewerage.
However that is hardly the fault of SW Water and their profitability is no higher than any other water company - profits are controlled by the Regulator ofwat who has far bigger teeth than other Regulators.
You can go right back and blame Maggie Thatcher's Government who privatised the water industry and left the South West with an inadequate infrastructure and huge commitments, with relatively few residents and industry to foot the bill.
An analogy would be if the Post Office was privatised, and each area had to pay an economic cost for postage, some of the Scottish Islands would pay £3 to post a letter.0 -

It would not be allowed for one company to provided the water for another company to sell it when they have no way of tracking how much is being used. this is relativeley easy to do.
