The sum I was trying to do was =SUM(E4+C5-D5) it adds the e4 and c5 but then also adds d5 and I wanted it to subtract d5. If I'm making any sense at all? So i can work out monies going in and out.

Just a thought... does D5 contain a negative number? If so that will explain why it appears to add it. (eg 7 - -3 = 10)

I would just use the formula =E4+C5-D5)
    That's the correct way.
If you want to use SUM, try =SUM((E4+C5)-D5)
    And that definitely isn't!

SUM function in spreadsheet's is generally not very well used by people!

But, as Stompa says above, SUM is not required for the calculation you're trying to do...

    =sum(C5:D5)

SUM is used over a range. If there are negative values it will take those off.

    This will be inappropriate here, though, as the OP wants to enter positive values as per a bank statement. The correct formula is;
    =E4+C5-D5
where E4 is the previous balance, C5 is the current Income and D5 is the current Expenditure.

With the SUM function you can for example:

    =SUM(A1,A3) sum two cells
=SUM(F5:F8) sum four cells in column F
    =SUM(F:F) sum a column

and combine these into a complex thing like

    =SUM(A5,B5:B8,C5:D6)-SUM(E5:G5)

add a cell, a column of 4 cells, a square of 4 cells and then subtract a row of 3 cells

Don't forget the Moneysavingexpert Budget Planner, the depressing one where after you have entered all our outgoings and income, it automatically calculates how much is left for discretionary spending at the end of an average month. Depressing cos it always seems to report a minus figure!
