TT do say up to 8mb. If 8mb was acheivable you would probaly have to wait to early in the morning to get it.

Carphone Warehouse group companies lie with regards to just about everything else, so it really wouldn't surprise me.0

i'm not 100% sure about TT's maximum speed, but for BT, you use can this site: http://www.freedom2surf.net/adsl/homeuser.php?is=stressed.. type your home-number and postcode and it would say:
"Contratulations, BT report your local exchange (*****) is ADSL enabled, and your line (020********) could have ADSL speeds of up to 6.00 Mb/s."... the writing in bold will vary depending on your line speed. mine as you can see is 6Mb/s.
i'm prety certan this shows the maximum line speed for TT customers as well, seeing as they both use the same exchanges and lines.0 -
I think the TT offer depends on them installing their own gear in the exchange, so their speed wouldn't necessarily be the same as the BT one - but if you are some distance away from the exchange then you probably would be limitedgagglesdad wrote:How can i find out what speed talktalk's free bb would run at on my line? why are you all looking at the speed ,talktalk will spread the service so if there is alot of people around you with talktalk you will all share the speed as we have been told before if you download alot of files you are stopping other people using the net ,think before you join0

From what I've heard as well is that the further you are from an exchange the slower the connection. So only if you're pretty close to the exchange will you'll truly get 8mb.0

Hi all - I'D suggest its a bit harsh to say TT lie. Like anything in this world they are just marketing the best possible outcome.
The link posted by Skiddy2k estimates the physical capability of the copper line going into your house. The maximum line capability with ASDL technology is 8MB. This degrades the further away you are from the exchange, the type of LLU cable/equipment used in the exchange and the quality of the termination points along the way. An average household in the UK is likely to have a capability of 3-6MB.
TT T&C clearly state they are going to apply traffic shaping to p2p and other selected applications. This means they will run software that automatically 'slows' your line speed during peak hours.
So in summary:- The maxiumum capability of an unbundled ASDL line is 8mb
- Your actual capability can be estimated at: OP Skiddy2khttp://www.freedom2surf.net/adsl/homeuser.php?is=stressed
- TT will ultimately decided how much you receive at any time in the day.
Personally i`m torn on the new TT deal. Unlimited UK and international calls is very tempting even without free b/band (MSE'rs interested in this should consider http://www.swiftcall-residential.co.uk/english/asp/unlimited_about.asp which inc. mobile phone service). On the downside, I am a heavy p2p user and would prefer TT to give me an option to pay extra for uncapped usage without traffic shapping.
Am I going to swap? Not sure yet - waiting for the bow wave to clear and see how the customer service element forms. Besides, I`m still waiting for an accidental £200 NTL credit to work itself off.....0
