Comet - AVOID if want good customer service

Bought a Samsung camera from comet. Had problems from day 1 with the camera saying batteries flat. Thought it was the batteries at first, but after making sure they were charged then getting new one finally worked out that it was the camera. Took it back to comet but was 7 months old by now so they wanted to repair. OK. Coment lost it for 2 weeks (they said the repairers lost it, the repairers say comet didn't send it). Finally got it back "repaired" and scratched. Phoned to complain. Manager will call you back - never did. Tried the camera in the house. Seemed ok but first time took out to record real memories it stopped working again, same problem. Took it back to comet. They refused to do anything except send it away again. Not good enough, for one you scratched it and for two unlikely you will find an intermitent fault like this if you didn't fix it first time round. Wrote to head office. They took a wekk to reply. Was persuaded to let them inspect it. Another 3 weeks delay. Apparently Samsung collect cameras and they took a long time to collect it - yeah right, so it was just fedex'ed next day then? What tosh. Comet lost it again. Now come back with no fault found. Have been offered the camera back or a gift voucher. Not good enough. NO WAY am I ever buying anything from comet again. The service is cr$p.

Are sure its not the batteries your using (assuming it takes batteries and not running off internal batteries). Only a lot of digital cameras need high performance batteries especially if using rechargeables. My old camera was a Sasmsung and took AA batteries. It would only work with Woolsworth Basic or Boots batteries! Other ones it'd either not turn on or turn on and battery die after about 10 seconds. I think they were both alkaline batteries.
Not defending Comet but its worth a thought. Also have you googled your camera make to see if other people have problems? There may be a fault with the actual make of camera.

It may be generic to camera. What happens is you turn on, the lens comes halfway out, then the camera says low battery and shuts down. The girl at comet on the service counter said she had the model before and had problems that sounded similar.

It definitely isn't the batteries. Tried different set, then bought brand new 2700mAhr NimH. And the last time it failed, without changing or charging the batteries, the camera worked again later that day.

Good tip on the google search. There is post on Moneysavingexpert about a D85 with the same problem so it looks like it could well be generic to the D85.

    Comet......

over the years i have bought many things from comet, and maybe i was lucky but i never had cause to complain, i.e. the goods all worked, so i stopped buying the extended warranties.

Last year i bought a high end (aka expensive) laptop from them. they price matched John Lewis which meant that the knocked £200 off the price of the laptop, making it £700 (instead of the £900 they had it on the shelf at). I explained to the sales ast that i would think about it, to which she replied, that would I take the deal today if she threw in an extended warranty - sadly i did that. she then after spending half an hour filing paperwork in said that my delivery charge would be £12, to which i replied, angrily, 'cancel the entire thing then, you said if i take it today you would thrown in the warranty, i might aswell go to john lewis' she then hurriedly arranged to cancel the delivery charge, so i accpted the deal.

a couple of weeks back someone closed the laptop - with a pen on the keyboard - which cracked one of the plastic layers which cover the screen, however the screen still worked (its a HP with touch screen - so the screen was more cosmeticlly damaged then technically damaged). having taken the laptop into comet for repair i was phoned last week and told that it was being written off, when i asked why i was told that the screen is a write off, i explained that the screen still worked and was told "we will give you £540 for the replacement" i asked for the machine back and was told that because i had sent the machine in for repair, the only people who could request the machine back were the store themselves, because Comet had written off the machine via their insurers! i questioned that and was refused the machine back (even though i had not agreed to the £540), i wanted the machine back so that i could obtain an independant cost for repair.

Comet are now saying that they didnt throw in the extended warranty - i purchassed it, they at my request knocked the price of the warranty off the laptop! so they knocked £200 off the original price as a price match, then they knocked the cost of the warranty off which was another £150, so they now value a £900 machine at £540 even after 'throwing in' the warranty - i.e. i still paid them the £700 'price match' price!

My point in this is be very wary, if they offer to throw in an extended warranty, make sure that they dont get around it by saying ' we cant discount the price of the goods anymore, and we cant give you the warranty free, so we will knock the warranty price off the purchase price then add it back on, that way we are still giving you the warranty for free (which is a conversation i never had with comet anyway). They are not giving it to you -you are buying it. Also if the item goes in for repair, they in effect confiscate it and offer you the price of the item LESS the cost of the waranty in vouchers which can only be spent in comet. so a £700 item can be written off, with no comebacks.

When i asked them if they considered that since they valued the laptop at £540 in the first place, did they over price the extended warranty they got shirty.

    Sounds pretty carp.

Personally, I don't touch a camera if it's Canon or Panasonic. They're brilliant.

  • I purchased a Acer Aspiron One netbook for my sons 7th birthday, bought it on the 7th june as they had a good deal and when my son opened it on the 22nd July it didnt work. froze on a black screen. Recovery disk didnt work. Comet refused a replacement or a refund and have sent it off for a 10 day repair. Im gutted, my son has nothing for his birthday and they cant replace it even though it was broke on opening. They even said " there products are not sold by them, Acer sold us the netbook so we have to deal with them Even though i have a receipt from Comet. WILL NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN..... ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS

Gosh don't get me started about comet. Bought a PC from them, about 8 months down the line it broke. I spent hours on the phone, trying to get a person to come around. They kept passing me from person to person and every single one asked me the same questions, is it turned on etc! When they did come around, they took the PC away took about a month to come back, and as soon as I unwraped it it had a new fault, when I plugged it in to the display it didn't work, there was no responce, they hadn't even checked it, they just replaced the hard drive! Anyway after many months and countless visits/collections, they wrote it off! I am never going to buy from them again!

There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

I recently bought an Acer laptop and printer/scanner from Comet. On the laptop the cd/dvd driver worked when I loaded the trial Microsoft Office............today, trying to install the printer it was stuck and no way will it come out. Luckily I could download it but there were still problems the latest being putting paper in (seems to only take three sheets at a time) and nothing getting printed on it !
Four times today I've been on to their helpline......last assistant said she would e mail me with instructions on how to clean the nozzles on the cartridges..........no e mail as yet and that was a few hours ago but at least I've got hope of getting it working.
Looks very much the lap top will have to be returned and I'm hoping for a refund !!
Angela - how can they say that Acer sold you the netbook if you had a receipt from Comet ? All the chaps in the Comet store I got mine from had Comet name badges on...............not Acer and as far as I'm concerned Comet sold it to me.
A lesson learned the expensive way at this rate.
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !
