Palm Pre vs. iphone?!

Appologies if this question repeats anything that may already be talked about in another thread, I tried looking for the answers I need but there's just too many damn posts in these threads to trawl through them all!

I have just come across this article (http://money.sky.com/mp/saving/articles/iphone-paying-too-much-for-mobile-phone-jun.html) in which the Palm Pre is mentioned and referred to as a cheaper version of the Iphone 3G S but as I understand it, this phone isn't yet available in the UK. I just wanted to know if anyone knew if this Palm Pre is worth waiting for, or generally any info about it? Or, shall I just go ahead and blow all my hard-earned cash on the Iphone? I'm willing to patient if the Palm Pre is any good.

Your help will be much appreciated! :D

Apple have specifically withdrawn iTunes support for the Pre. It also has a worse touch-screen, sharp edges on the keyboard popup mechanism, but a really innovative OS and usability model.

Personally, given the choice between the two, I'd take an iPhone 3G S.

Obviously it depends how cheap it is- I suspect that it will be priced in the same bracket as the "Normal" phones per month but with an upfront fee. The Iphone is great but is just too expensive per month in my opinion.

For me, Why would I still wait for it? for sure Palm Pre as you've said the cheaper version of an Iphone that so, it might be low quality or something. Come to think of it, a cheaper one with the same quality? uhmm...:confused:

If I wanted an iPhone, I'd have one by now. OK, I'm a Palm diehard, with a trusty Treo 680, and can't wait for the Pre. No-one knows the UK price yet, but it MUST be cheaper than the iPhone 3GS to gain some market share. It'll be exclusive to o2 like the iPhone.
It has a physical keyboard. Is this important to you? It is to me. You don't have to sync stuff to it from iTunes like with the iPhone, you can just copy onto it like a USB drive. As of WebOS 1.1 they've got iTunes syncing back on the Pre, but I woudn't bet against Apple 'fixing' this again. Don't buy a Pre if iTunes syncing is a must. Since someone brought up quality/design issues with the Pre, I must bring up some complaints that have been made about the iPhone 3GS getting VERY warm in use.
Oh, and did I mention multitasking?! You know, running several things at once?! Yeah, Pre does that, iPhone doesn't. I think that multitasking (being part of a modern, decent OS) is one of the key things that makes a smartphone a smartphone. By this definition, the iPhone is not a smartphone.
Did I mention I'm slightly biased?! I do have an Apple computer though!

Think I've had about 6 Palm models before getting fed up of the archaic technology about 12 months ago and going to Symbian. I'd love the Pre to reinvigorate Palm but I can't help feeling their years of mess-ups means they've missed the boat however good the OS and hardware is. It's only going to compete if it can rebuild its apps library, and even if it's got a PalmOS emulator for the thousands of old apps, I just don't see developers choosing to develop in WebOS from scratch with the momentum iPhone has got. Even Android seems to be struggling in this area.

Palm Pre. The iPhones non-multitasking is a serious serious let down. The web browsing is second to none, but other than that the rest of the iPhone is pretty useless.

Palm, although has very apps atm, will grow.
  • Go for the iphone - it really is as good as the hype suggests.

rash.m2k - according to some reviews the browser in the Pre actually beats the iPhone's, adn the 1.1 update apparantly made it faster.
Make no mistake, WebOS is very young, and you could say not even complete, but it's good enough now, and being tested on Americans, so hopefully it'll be even better when it gets to Europe!
  • You wont regret getting an Iphone!:D
