Strange that it started again with a faulty coil, I wonder if the OP's " friend " added a drop of fuel to get it to the garage for the diagnosis? ..

All manner of vehicle electical faults can be worsened as they heat up. Its possible that the fault in the coil pack caused a component or winding to break and after it has been stopped for a while was able to start working again as it had cooled down. All the transmission faults mentioned were red herrings anyway as an engine will run, even if it has nothing to drive!!!! ie you can rev the engine but it won't move anywhere.(clutch drive shaft)
Coil packs are more or less disposable these days on may cars anyway & need replaced every few years. The snapping cound you heard might have been transmission backlash with the car "jerking" as power was applied intermittently or as it broke off completely.0 -

Really?
Strange, I have never changed one on any of the many Japanese cars that I have ever owned.
That may well be true for French junk, I don't know, because I would not touch one with a barge pole.0
