Broken Car!

Hi,

I have a 51 reg Peugeot 206, 1.4 GLX, and it's just broken on me. I was going uphill from my house when it lost all power. The engine just cut out and the power steering stopped working, and the brakes became really heavy and barely worked too. There was also a kind of ominous snapping noise, or something 'went' in the engine. I've left it parked up in gear on the hill, as I don't dare see if it starts! Any ideas what could be wrong?
My friend is hopefully coming to look at it later, but I want to be prepared for the worst!

BTW, It had a new cambelt fitted in December I think, and was also serviced in November.

Sounds like the clutch to me. Same sort of symptoms as a friend, his went about a year ago and it sounds fairly similar.

The brakes and power steering going may only be because the engine cut out. Try using the brakes, and try steering without the engine on, and neither work properly!

    Then again, I'm no mechanic!

I think we could all have a guess at what has gone wrong, however without an inspection of the vehicle, it will only be that; a guess.

Lord, you're a fairly miserable sod aren't you Inactive?! Maybe try and help rather than bringing your doom and gloom this way.

Even though we can't be sure without a look at the car, no harm in trying to help is there.

Even though it was only changed around 6/7 months ago, and I haven't done that many miles? :(
The cambelt went on my previous car so I made sure I got it done on this one. If it is that, then I don't have much luck!

What actual " help " is there in guessing what is wrong with a car that none of us can actually inspect, I could say that the driveshaft has broken, or the OP has run out of fuel, it would not actually help the OP.

As you say, you are not a mechanic, so what help are you?
  • The brakes and power steering are simply because the engine cut out and the "electrics" died so these are most likely fine.

The snapping is more ominous and could be anything really.

It could be as simple as you hit a rather large dent and stalled to a completely new engine.

You do need a professional opinion.

The clutch one seems a bit of a random guess for me although possible I suppose but something like a belt seems far more likely.

Thanks for all the opinions. My friend came round and got it started, and we took it to a garage who said it's most likely the coil pack. So will get a new one fitted and take it from there.
Thankfully the timing belt is still intact!
  • i've heard some horror stories about the pug 206, and 3 of these stories are things that have happened to people i know, 2 of them were nearly killed and sued!!!
