B&Q sell chain by the length, ie you select the chain you want and they cut off as much as you need. When you're in there you could outline to one of their "experts" the problem you've experienced with the bracket coming off the wall so easily. Actually come to think of it a local hardware shop may sell chains too, and have someone able to give advice.

Don't know about the punchbag chains...they would definitely be strong enough, just wondering how you'd attach them to your basket and shorten them if they are a bit too long.

Ah I see, that looks like it'd be secure and easy to attach. Perhaps ask the seller what weight it's designed to hold, then if it's equal to or less than the weight of your wet basket it'd be suitable. But that's just what I think. If you're happy, then I'd say go ahead!

Also ensure it's long enough by the time the four dangly bits are spread out around the basket rim...you don't want the basket so high up it gets awkward to put water into as you'll be watering it maybe twice a day in hot weather...might as well make it easy for yourself.

I need to attach a bracket to the wall beside my front door...but am too scared of making a mess....my last house had a bracket already there when I moved in. It was made out of an old shelf support but it took the weight of a very full basket year in and year out. I never had the problem you had with the chain itself giving way, you'd think the one you were sold would be fit for the job it's meant for - hope you got a refund.

Check out supermarket and garden centre reductions. I called in Homebase today, and came out with 20 panseys for £1.98. Were originally £2.99 for 10, on offer at £1.99, and had an orange sticker on to knock it down to 99p. Often these plants are reduced simply because they have reached their 'sell-by-date', or because the staff don't water them enough. Nip off the dead heads, pot out and water. They will look gorgeous in the morning !!
If anyone is interested they also had wall flowers and loads of hanging baskets half price - about £5 I think, in those nice wicker baskets. I was tempted, but I am trying to be good, and I have some old wire baskets left from last yr. So I 'Did it myself' !!

B & Q have some knock-down offers too. Got 24 violas for £1 and 12 calendulas for £1 at the weekend. They had it on all different bedding, pansies and whatnot and they still looked in perfectly good condition.

One other point, if you are about to put out hanging baskets be careful as your plants may still need frost protection. All these places sell lots of bedding plants and they come with little warning about frosts. So many people must get caught out this way.

Also ready made spring hanging baskets with ivy about 3 or 4 and stuffed full of pansies and with a yellow foliage plant in the middle (evergreen) - well worth £4.99 (was £15) looks established and beautiful on my shed!! cheaper than doing your own and you can squeeze lobelia etc plant plugs in between the plants.

    Hi guys,

My local frozen food store is selling off old wire shopping baskets and I've bought 6 to make into hanging baskets (50p each!). I need to line them but really don't have much, if any, money for the job....could anyone suggest something that I might already have around the house, or could buy very cheaply which would work well as a liner for the baskets??

    Cheers everyone,

I use old, real wool, jumpers as liners. Ask around if you haven't got any!
My friend uses real wool blankets (she got a load from a bootsales).
