Hanging Baskets

  • Unfortunately it may be a little early to plant out now. Generally the advice is to leave bedding plants until mid to late May. You can still put plants in but you must be prepared to nip outside with some fleece to cover then over if there is any sign of frost. In terms of the colours you mention, you can get some lovely Cape Daisies in pink and white which are good for the front to mid border. This will last one year only which isn't very cost effective but they look stunning and are available from most garden centres. Geraniums are also great and available in a widerange of colours. They have daisy type flowers with good ground coverage. The best bit is that they come back year after year. If they get to big you can divide the clump (at the root) and replant one bit somewhere else.

I normally wait to plant out bedding and hanging baskets until at least the first bank holiday in May, sometimes later if the weather is a bit chilly.

If you think it is going to be cold over night the best thing for your hanging baskets would be to wrap in a bit of bubble wrap.

I like to use a mixture of plants and tend to find the best ones (in terms of price and surviveability!) come from B & Q in the large packs. I use Bizzy Lizzies, Lobelia, Fuschias (sp?) and can't remember the others at the moment. If I do remember I will post them.

    Ok here goes.....

Just attached the HEAVY duty basket chain to the basket and tried to lift them off the pots they are sitting on.
    1) the HEAVY duty chain clips bent open and basket fell to the floor

    2) checked the NEW HEAVY duty brackets that are drilled into the wall, gave it sa tug and that came out of the wall

    So.... what can I do??

    What chain??
    What bracket??

My first pride and joy baskets :o

baskets are 18" so not small ones and everthing I bought ie chain and bracket should work with them.

I've had a similar problem and I wonder if the water retaining gel crystals I used made the basket too heavy?? My sad, tumbled-all-over-the-place basket is now laying limply in the porch until further notice..... any help/ideas gratefully received!!!

    Thanks

Did you use rawl plugs with good screws when you attached the brackets to the wall? After all I can put a full load of wet washing up on my line which is attached to the wall by a hook/screw type thing so there really should be no problem with weight for the bracket. Not much idea about the chains though, sorry.

Used the raw plaugs and screws that came with the brackets, do you think that I could buy heavier duty screws and raw plugs? would that work?
