If you still have it this might be of some use to you. Alternatively, if you install Ubuntu on it you can get the most popular codecs and plugins in just a few simple steps.

In some ways, software installation in Linux is really easy. In other ways... not so much.

Thanks for the pointers. I took it back as the next day it stopped booting up. Finally settled on a Samsung NC10.

though thats because 99.% of the users on here use windows? More users = more problems.

Probably closer to 90% are using Windows; if we're just taking about XP, then it's probably less than 70%.

Regardless of the exact percentage, people still have problems with it, as they have problems with Mac OS X and Linux.

None of them are hassle free for everyone.
If you've the time to spend on linux then i'm sure its fine. I'm just past the point in my life where i see installing and understanding completely different o/s's as 'fun' or even worth the hassle.

Well that's fair enough, but Linux has a lot to offer.

And on the Microsoft side of things, we've had Vista, and are soon to have Windows 7. Windows XP users will have to move to a different OS eventually. XP is already in Microsoft's Extended Support phase, which means they will only issue security updates for it and not much else. In less than 5 years, Microsoft will totally stop issuing updates for it.

I don't see the point of buying a new computer with an old operating system on it, but it's the OP's money I guess, not mine.

According to this, Windows had 87.75% of the end-user market as of May this year. The breakdown reveals that Windows XP took top place overall with 61.54% of the pie, whilst Vista lagged behind with a relatively paltry 24.35%.
