opening a current account with no credit history

I have returned to the UK after living in Spain for 8 years.

I have sorted out a room in a house to live for at least the next 12 months. I am looking to get a proper current account with full facilities, not some basic account. Work pay me in cash on a friday £250.

I know soon it is the time councils update the voters roll so I will be registering at my address, however I do know it will be the best part of several months before this goes through.

Which bank offer full facilities with fairly low credit score?, I did a free post code check it came back 570 out of 1000, but I feel a bit inaccurate. In a bid to improve my credit score is it best saying I have lived there for 3yrs even if I am not registered at the voters roll?.

I have been told getting a contract phone will help with orange sim only?, also a mate said get a cashplus credit builder.

Is it best just to apply the once then again in 6mths time for a credit card or overdraft?

Please help

Many Thanks

James

Unless you have specific 'bad' credit and can provide suitable address verification I'm sure all banks would give you a full account. It would likely be without any overdraft initially but your use of the account over a few months would likely mean being able to have one later.

I have been told Abbey are a lad in work said he went there no previous address & said he lived there 3yrs, but left it two months after getting a letter from the local council saying on the rolling register.

He got £300 overdraft, Visa Debit, Cheque Guarantee Card & a Abbey Mastercard for £250.

Just wondering what other people have been given before applying myself.

6% seems good interest to me, but not really looked around worried I will get knocked back.

You won't know till you try. By the sounds of it he got lucky by lying on the application.
  • I had no credit history and Citibank gave me a Access account with a Visa Debit Card, abbey on the otherhand we not as helpful and would only offer a basic account with a cashcard - it is all hit and miss if you ask me

I had nothing at all on my credit report when I turned 18 back in December. I got a HSBC Plus Current Account. I don't think no history is a bad thing with a current account, only bad history.

You're spot on mate..... no history, especially as you'll have proof of living in Spain (i.e. Spanish bank statements and bills etc) is not a bad thing and can be easily appealed and won. Best to go into the bank though with paperwork in hand and they will override any decline as you'd have exceptional circumstances for not appearing on their systems and the proof you have will confirm what you're saying.

Should be easy process and to be honest I think you'll find you'll have problems at HSBC. :j

Remember citi are hit-and-miss... last year they went mad offering anyone an account, and I mean anyone! It was like 'the more defaults the better' but then again people like me with 0 defaults cannot get a citi bank account but they gave me the gold card - work that one out?!

I applied jan 2009 for bank and CC and got declined for bank but got the CC with £2k limit. I couldn;t figure it..... then last week I get a letter upping limit to £4k. Thats now more risk than having a bank account with chq book lol..... however, may apply for bank later as I now have history which will help.

Try applying for LTSB - you can do the application through website and it lets you input non UK address for previous address.

My half came to UK in December 2007. I have registered her on Votors roll and joint Electric bill. The Electric bill arrives in Jan 08 - She had no credit histrory at all and applied for LTSB Classic accoumt online. Couple of days later received confirmation letter that the account has been opened and just need to proof name and add. I taken her to nearest branch with hre passport and Electric. Account was activated card and chq book ordered.

After 4 months she was offered 1k overdraft.

Ok thanks guyz, but anyone specifically know what will help getting better products?

Length you say at address?, If the address is clean?, How much you say you earn? etc etc & which banks are most easy to get acceptence in the credit crunch.

Many thanks if you can help.

My last address 9yrs ago a foreigner had 2 cifas on the address I had loads of problems just getting a current account with Lloyds just because the CIFAS was with them, I was told wont affect me as not same name, dob, but it really did at that time. They only gave me a cash card account, wheras mate who was 21 got full account we worked same place & on voters same time, both on phone at home & same age.
