Do you need insurance to park on the road?

It doesn't have to be insured in its own right for you to use your driving other cars cover. (Unless stated as a condition (rarely) on your certificate where the DOC cover is set out).
The issue about whether or not the car has its own insurance is when you drive an uninsured vehicle using your own cover and leave it parked on the road somewhere, as already covered in this thread.0 -
Ok, so if people were test driving on their own insurance and the car was not insured in it's own right, then Badger_Lady would need to make sure she told them not to stop and leave the car parked for any reason.0

If you let a stranger test drive your car alone you are asking for trouble!
Also don't let anyone test drive your car without satisfying yourself they are covered by insurance and a driving licence to do so.
You should request photo id to check the documents produced are ok.0 -

I wouldn't necessarily agree that you are asking for it but you do have to take the necessary precautions.
I'm a motorcyclist and it isn't always possible to take passengers.
What we do is leave cash with friend OR a bike/car of at least equivalent value with V5 and photo id i.e. some kind of security to at least the value of the vehicle being test driven.
I wouldn't necessarily know I shouldn't stop for the loo or a bag of crips unless anyone actually told me, so if the vehicle is not insured to be on the public road then they need to know.0 -
You are too trusting.
A complete stranger can just say "yes yes yes" to you when you tell them not to park up. Then do the opposite - after all its not his car!
A complete stranger may assure you he's a good driver until he drives of crashing your gears.
Anyway, big difference to you test riding a single seat bike and my advice which was of course aimed at people allowing their private cars to be test driven by strangers. Seems a bit contrived to use that as a point to have another argument with me (after you again giving some poor advice, this time on driving other cars not being allowed unless the other car has insurance in place!)0 -
You are too trusting.
I am very careful both buying and selling as I've explained.
Security and proof are required.
I would want cash and proof before letting anyone drive my car or bike.
I don't feel I can get the best out of a test drive with people "breathing down my neck".
I didn't come here for a row and I'm not wasting my life or others threads rowing with you.

You have to be careful when allowing a test drive as occassionally some people use this as an opportunity to steal a car along with the precious keys. They sometimes drive off once they are sitting in the driving seat and you are walking around to get into the passenger seat.
Most of the possible problems can be avoided by being sensible eg getting into the passenger seat before you pass the keys over, if you are concerned the driver may use threats then take another person or leave their driving licence at your home so they have to return to your home to collect it etc.
Most car dealers Insurance requires them to see the test drivers driving licence and one prerabbly two original utility bills (These help confirm their address).
Like I said if you are sensible with a test drive most of the risks can be avoided, if you need more advice on it you could post on the motoring forum on MSE as there are a lot of dealers on there who may have other advice0 -
OK, I've told my insurance company not to renew (as a minimum)... I'm just going to aim to sell the car quickly. Now listed on eBay, hopefully do the job: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=150360565458
