I am now wondering whether it is worth the effort!

You do seem a little confused. Are you sure that what you have clicked is the shortcut on your desktop to open Opera? Forget about IE, that is a totally different browser on your desktop, close that down.

The first time you open Opera it will display a page welcoming you to Opera 9. Close that and you will probably have a page showing 9 Speed-dial icons, which you can in due course set up to your favourite sites. Or it may have opened the default home page, which will be one of the pages on the Opera website (not sure which one), and maybe this is telling you about their Opera 10 Beta version. As explained it is very easy to change your homepage to anything you want, or even as I do set it to 'opera:blank' which is a blank page. If you type somewhere else in the address bar (eg https://www.bbc.co.uk) do you go to that site, if so Opera is basically working.

Welcome to Opera, it is a great browser, I have been using it for many years.

I have downloaded Opera 9 again and installed same but it still showing Opera Beta format page.
Had message from IE saying it has stopped this download so I chose to install and went through the whole procedure again, but nothing has changed! I have the Icon, the Opera 9 programme is on my computer, so what is going wrong?

I am not convinced you have even installed Opera....

In IE, go to http://www.opera.com/download/ and click on the big 'Download Opera' button. If IE comes up asking what to do with it, tell it to SAVE the file to your computer, do NOT choose 'run from this location'. When the download is complete close IE down, you do not need that again (if ever...?).

Find the downloaded file on your computer, maybe on your desktop or your default download location. You should have a file 'Opera_964_en_Setup.exe'. Double click on that to run it, it will open up an installer program and take you through various options. At the end of the installation it will say 'Installation complete' with an option to 'run Opera', choose that and Opera will open with the setting shown.

(I rather suspect that icon on your desktop is something IE has placed there and is a shortcut to some page in the Opera site, which will open in IE. Scrap that, you should now have a proper icon to open Opera (or you will find it at Start/Programs/Opera/))

Time for some screenshots we think....

To take a snapshot of whatever is on your screen, press the Print Screen button on your keyboard.

Then go to the Windows Start button in the bottom left hand corner of your screen and click on All Programs > Accessories > Paint.

Once you have Paint open, click on the Edit tab and choose Paste and then the File tab and choose Save as. When the box appears, choose to save to your Desktop, choose the File type as JPEG and name the file(any name or number will do). Choose OK and the 'snapshot' will be saved as a picture on your desktop.

Now to post it so we can see it on the board.

Go to Imageshack, click on Browse and navigate to the picture on your Desktop. Double click on the file when found and the location will be entered on the webpage.
Click start upload!. When the the file has finished uploading, scroll down the page to 'show image to friends'. Copy the link and find your way to the Moneysavingexpert forum. Make your post as usual, but when wanting to add a pic, find the little icon the looks like a letter with a postage stamp and a couple of pyramids. Click on it, clear whatever is in there and paste your link in.

If IE puts a block on the window when you try to open it and gives you a notice at the top of your screen, click on the notice and choose 'Temporarily allow scripted windows'.

Then you can try clicking on the icon again.

Now you can show us exactly what you can see.
