Cancelling bupa insurance - advice needed

Options
Hi all,
This is my first post so really sorry if i get it all wrong!:o
i had a knee operation about 6 weeks ago (owwww!)- with all my treatment so far funded by my BUPA health insurance which I get through work. My policy year ends on 31st July and will be automatically renewed but I am very likely (99.99%)to be made redundant before Christmas.

I will continue to need Physio treatment and 6 weekly consultant check up's for a good few months yet but am worried that if I continue to claim on bupa that when I am made redundant and my employer cancels my policy I will be left with a big bill for cancelling my policy part way through the year.

I have phoned up bupa for advice on this and they (predictably!) tried to sell me my own private health insurance policy. This could be an option but if I am made redundant I don't really want to commit myself to shelling out more money each month than I absolutely have to. I have also emailed bupa (no response as yet) and checked all the documentation I have but have failed to find an answer

I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experience with this kind of situation?

I'm looking forward to all your replies.

If your policy is cancelled, then any claims made after the date of the cancellation are unlikely to be paid.

Cross the bridge if you ever come to it. As soon as your policy is cancelled, then contact BUPA for their advice. If it is too expensive for you to take out a new policy, and you don't want to pay for private treatment then explain to your medical advisors and go via NHS.

If you ARE made redundant, your policy will continue to the end of the month you are made redundant. Bupa will offer you a few varieties of 'individual' policies (varying levels of cover) as opposed to 'group' cover. This will be the only way you will be able to cover this particular continuing condition. Other companies will let you switch over but not include this current condition due to the recency.

You need to do some maths and work out if you want to carry on with Bupa and have all your pre-existing conditions covered - or pay less with someone else and afford the physio out of the difference...phew!

Thank you for your really quick response!
What happens if I choose not to take out one of the 'individual' policies? Or is this not a choice I have?!

If you don't carry on with your own personal policy (which covers the existing condition) then you have a choice.

    1) Pay the bills yourself

    2) Stop all the private treatment and go NHS.

Just carrying on with the private treatment after your BUPA policy is cancelled will result in the hospitals/doctors/physios etc pursuing you for any unpaid bills.

Thank you Quentin. I think I am beginning to unravel all my confusion now!
I am happy to go NHS and would stop private treatment if and when I am made redundant. I just wanted some reassurance that I wouldn't be pursued to pay part of any claims I had already made if my policy was cancelled before the full year.

I think I was trying to compare it to, for example, a phone contract where is you cancel before the end of your term you are still liable to pay for the remainder of your term?

You can of course afford to lose some commission as you tout for business here (breaking the forum rules) without incurring any marketing costs. We see you now advertise your broker status in every post you make. For the sake of balance your rogue status needs to be pointed out as well!

All this extra business you cynically get is a bonus for you, and you know it! (Gained by out and out abuse of this site)

Now you want us to be sorry for you because you "lose" some commission when you do a forbidden deal taking advantage of your MSE membership! Everyone say ahhh for the rogue "regulated professional".

Yes sorry about the delay Wutang & Mollypip. I've had a week abroad. Although did check my emails and the MSE site on a few occaisions whilst abroad i didn't spot this one.

All the policies i set up are legitimate. Even if i've stripped it of most of the commission i earn to help an MSE member get a better deal than they otherwise would. It is still 100% legitimate, perfectly acceptable and within the law to do so. Many big companies offer cashback etc nowadays and its definately in the consumers/public's interest.

Pay them all the initial commission upfront (and you know about adding 25% on to the Pru commission if they are non-smokers etc) and the renewal commission every year too then you good samaritan.

No you don't understand it..... I am aware that you on the other hand would prefer to see me destitute and homeless if possible.

No. You are the one who doesn't understand.

    Nobody wants your blood.

Just stick to the rules, stop touting and post here without just looking for free advertising and taking advantage of the lack of moderation. You proudly tell us you obey your professional regulations yet hypocritically come here and constantly evade the MSE rules.

Although i'm glad to hear you do not want my blood. I do not recognise your authority, because thank god you have none so stop pretending your a moderator. I will say again show us a better deal or cease your incessant whinning and help people to save money instead of attacking people who are doing exactly that.
