ending o2 contract
I'm currently travelling abroad and cancelled my o2 contract before I left. They persuaded me to go to pay as you go and sent me a sim pac but I ran out of time to activate it.
They have continued taking monthly direct debits. I phoned to query and they said because I didn't use the pac code it reverted back to monthly contract. When I said no-one told me this would happen they said they sent a letter which I did not receive and they have deleted the phone conversation where they were supposed to tell me but didn't.
How do I get my money back

A PAC is not a cancellation, it is an option to migrate your service. If not used, it expires after 30 days and your original contract continues. So unless you can confirm that you cancelled your original service (did you do this is writing by recorded delivery?) then you are not going to have any success in getting a refund unfortunately. No free lunch, and no free laptop
