Because i rang the moving department and told them i was moving, not once did they ask if i owned both properties, the fact being that i don't and i am a council tenant. Haven't had a response, but there should be something done to protect the customer.

Well they are not mind readers. How were they supposed to know you are a council tennent? Lots of my friends own two properties and tend to move up whilst keeping the old one. If they were cut off they would be mad too.

I think you need to explain things in simple terms to call centres and then confirm it in writing, then there can be no argument.

If you dispute the bill see Ofcom at http://www.ofcom.org.uk/

If they dispute you moving house then show them your tenancy agreement from the council that shows that you moved out from one address and into another address. This will give them the exact date that you moved out.
Also I assume you told the other utilities that you moved out and are now in a new house somewhere else, I'll bet they got it right! You could use the fact that you told the other utilities that you were moving.
Do you have itemised billing on you phone biills (mobile? - you mentioned that the battery was going) this will give you dates and times of when you called.
We used this for when we were in dispute with British Gas and luckily we could prove when we called them.

As you say i never had any problems with the other companies and it is funny that the moving house department is a sales department. Noone else asked if i was giving up the old house, wish i was in a position to own two houses, but unfortunately not.

Zippy - the point i was trying to make was that if they expect me to be a mind reader and know that their moving department doesnt actually move your account like every other moving department then they should ask if you are giving it up instead of me playing mind games and telling them i am when that is really the job of the moving department.

    Does that make sense.??

re zippys comment-my experience with Homecall-Knew how bad their customer service was so rang to query, advise and put it in writing giving them adequate notice.Rang again to check and double check. On the date did they get it right?NO.Several phone calls later, did they put it right -no.,not straightaway and they are an 0870 number, only comfort was no-one had moved into the house yet but it does make you scream.
