Oh dear. Needless to say I haven't a clue how to get an update. If it's foolproof I might have a go if someone tells me how.

It's not quite that simple in Linux; you need to run Firefox with administrative privileges and even then it may claim that there are no updates available.Firefox top line - Help, Check for updates.
A quick-and-dirty solution for the Eee PC involves downloading and running this script, then opening a terminal window and typing sudo firefox.
Only then can you check for updates.
