It does yes. When you apply to join, do they just send you a load of stuff that you then install. I'm ok at installing software etc but wasn't sure if there was anything more to it. What happens to the dial up modem that is built into my machine? Is it just defunct when I disconnect it?

Sorry another question. Do you know if this allows me on the internet at anytime of the day?? and is 3gb a lot?? I am worried that 3gb won't be enough and I get kicked off?

If I were you, I'd go with a company that seems to have good reputation on this website and is cheap. Don't worry about 12 month tie-in and take the free modem most will offer. That way you will get technical support.
The installation is very easy. I am not technical. You plug in the modem to phone socket and then also to PC via usb port. Comes with CD that you install. A wizard should talk you through the process and you just input the username and password that is sent to you from the ISP you've chosen. Easy peazy!
You probably won't need the tech support ( I have changed 3 times: BT, TT and madasafish and not needed it)but at least it's there if you need it.

3gb is ample , my mums on Virgin option 1 , does a fair bit of online shopping, email and selling/buying stuff on ebay and she never reaches her limit :)

the dial up modem is redundant as you thought but there is no point in removing it

just remember to remove the dialup cable that goes from your internal modem, and your landline - just in case you catch any nasties, since you'll be connected for longer on the internet, and make sure your firewall is on
