Im getting a solid fuel fireplace, cant afford to buy gas anymore - its only gonna get more expensive. Definitely go for efficiency in that respect.

Remember you still need a descent flue for solid fuel ,remember to get your chimney swept,or the air -flow on your flue checked,could be fun.

Moonrakerz, could I suggest you look at gel fireplaces ? I know they're not real fires, and they don't throw off any heat, but if all you're looking for is the effect, they do that quite well, IMHO. I was looking at them myself, purely from the point of view that you don't need any flue at all. https://www.gelfireplaces.com/flueless-fireplaces.html0
