Do I have to let another Gas company read my meter?

We've happily been filling in cards and making online meter readings for 2 1/2 years. In that time a meter reader has never stepped inside to look at the meters and we have never had a formal request / warrant etc. to see the gas or electric meters.
It should be pointed out that we have also never been in when a meter reader has called as, like a large proportion of the population, we both happen to work for a living (strange idea that!).
We'd be quite happy for Siemens to request an evening or weekend appointment but they've never asked.0
