Do I have to let another Gas company read my meter?

I got a card through my door about a gas meter reading. It says URGENT on it and is from Siemens 'Working in Partnership with British Gas'.

But I'm not with BG, I'm with Scottish Power so do I still need to make an appontment and let them read my meter or can I really just ignore it?

I'm not sure if different suppliers contract different companies to read meters or if Siemens also read Scottish Power customers' meters.

Why not just give the meter reading direct to your supplier?

I did yesterday actually, and also every month for the past 4 months. Which makes it more strange, but I don't think this is my supplier leaving the card.

Npower send round Southern Electric to read our electricity meter. Sometimes they shove the wrong card through the door. We just ignore the cards and give reading directly to Npower online.

They send round a company called Lowri Beck for the gas - seems weird that someone different has to read each meter?!

Check with your supplier as to who should be reading your meters. If it's Siemens then the chances are they just left the wrong type of card in error.

To compound the paranoia why not demand to see his/her CRB clearance?

E.on do have a meter reading side of there business so BG may have contracted them to read meters on there behalf (although where I live BG use Accuread). Again the only way to know for sure is to check with your supplier

It's perfectly normal for a different company to read your meter rather than your supplier (I work for a utility company). In these days of competition, most of the utilities choose to sub contract some if not all of their work.

Your supplier could employ one company to fit and maintain the meters (the MOP - meter operator) and another to read them (the DC - data collector) or do it themselves. If you have gas and electric, this could be four different companies involved, not counting the distributer (the company that actually operates the gas pipes or electric cables that come to your property).

If you're not sure, give them a call.

I read my meters and post the readings on th EDF website in return for Nectar points, but they still send two different companies to read the meters as well (one for gas, one for electric). No one has been able to explain why.....!

In these days of miss selling everyone should be on their guard. Check if your supplier will let you set up a password then anyone calling on their behalf will need to quote this. British Gas certainly do this.

e.on are a Distric network office (DNO) for electric. not surprising they would be reading meters.
