thanks all....lol markymoo - i would normally use ebuyer but like you say no way round it.....im no closer to deciding lol....might go to the shop and have a wander and see then google a few reviews of any that catch my eye....itll be used for basic browsing and mostly for listening to music - the louder the better knowing my son lol but, he does like mixing and that on his lappy so it really needs a good soundcard and good speakers.....oh and he likes to watch the odd film on it so cd/dvd drives are needed too...still would appreciate any help....thanks0

looking at the spec for the laptop in the link above, its a lot of laptop for the money in all aspects. So if you don't mind teh size issues of a 17" laptop then its a good buy & I wish it had been available 3 months ago when I spent twice taht on my 18.4" AcerChris Elvin0

The Toshiba A350D-203 has Harman/Kardon speakers in it...would you stick with an acer or would another be better?0 -
erm - are harmon karmen good lol? thanks hun...xx0

From a review of the Toshiba Satellite A300-177:They're Harman Kardon units, and while in the technology world brand names are not necessarily a guarantor of quality, Harman Kardon has consistently produced notebook speakers that have exceeded rival efforts. Thankfully, it doesn't break its tradition of excellence here. With hardly a hint of distortion even at maximum volume levels and deep, rumbling bass that shakes the whole chassis, their only (minor) weakness is that treble can come across as the slightest touch strained. But make no mistake, these are easily the best notebook speakers we have heard at this price point, even beating some smaller standalone systems.0

right thanks...so - it seems the toshiba is the one to go for? taking away the speakers - are the specs the best of the lot because if not i want the best specs and could buy some speakers....thanks...xx0

Well... you could conceivably get a better-specified Acer, but a good set of speakers like these will probably set you back around fifty quid.0

No laptop is going to have good enough speakers to mix on (though they could be used as a mix reference in combination with others), so I wouldn't let that sway your decision. If your son is serious about sound quality, he'll have to invest in a set of studio monitors. Something like these, while hardly pro quality, would be much more suitable. If he wanted to spend a bit more, these are very good monitors for the price.0
