Well whenever I a have taken up an MBNA offer, they have tried to talk me into taking a Direct Debit. In the past I have had to be quite forceful in saying that I do not want to pay by Direct Debit and that I am happy to pay when it is convenient to me.
  • Poor MBNA, desperate times, desperate measures.

Whilst they were encouraging you to pay by direct debit, did they mention that it would help you avoid potential late payment fees, backdated interest at silly rates, and loss of your 0% promo (and bye-bye to the handling fees..)?

...maybe that would have influenced your decision

Yes they did mention late payment fees and the loss of the 0% promo (and the inherent wasted handling fee).

No it didn't influence my decision, I haven't in the past (and don't intend to in the future) miss a payment.

    ...fair play...

...I keep wondering whether we are talking about the same MBNA...your MBNA seem to be a reasonable and helpful company

I know what you mean, my experience of MBNA has been one of a very generous organisation as they have enabled me to earn several thousand pounds utilising their 0% promotions.

However, I have read the other side of MBNA on here. They would appear to be one of those animals that you have to treat correctly. Do everything as per the agreement and you'll be fine and enjoy a good financial relationship. Treat them bad and they'll turn and bite without mercy

As I have said on here before DDs are not for everyone, they only work if you have a regular salary paid into your account at the same time every month and, believe it or not lots of people do not.

Also my MBNA card payment due date, which was originally on the 16th of the month is now up to the 1st of the month so there is a good chance that if I set up a DD they would try to take the money out before I had been paid and of course my bank would leap at the chance of charging me £38 for that!

DDs are not the answer to every ill that some posters seem to think.

I agree. But the card is in my hubby's name, I pay the standing order to the card for the payment. I'm certainly NOT going to set up a DD for it! Think hubby is going to have to see if he can switch the money on the card to someone else....anyone else at this rate!
