MBNA changing payment date

Hi,

My hubby has an MBNA credit card that had a 12 month interest free balance transfer. So last year I transferred the balance I had on a loan to the card and set up a standing order to pay the monthly payment to MBNA at what I was paying on the card (a lot more than the minimum payment).

Hubby logged on to check his online account last month to see a multitude of late payment charges and interest charges, even though there was evidence on the account of payment being made.

Hubby rang MBNA and it appears the payment date has been changing on a month by month basis, in some instances there has been a 2 week difference between payment dates!

MBNA admitted there had been a !!!! up and refunded the late payment fees as well as refunding the interest charges.

Hubby logged on just now and it's still happening!

Can they do this? How can they change the payment date so much on a month by month basis. You could understand say the money being due to be taken on the 3rd of the month but the payment date being the 4th one month and the 3rd the next but as I mentioned, some months there has been a 2 week difference between payment dates!

You're lucky to have had the charges and interest refunded so easily. Worth using this when you speak to them again about the most recent charges.

You should have a direct debit setup for the minimum to ensure no missed payment charges - or missed payments being reported on your credit report. If you've not checked it then you should.

Then in addition to the direct debit, you can setup a standard order.

yeah they can do what they want. Unethical but within the terms and cons they have set.

There was a post lastweek with a link to an interview with the chief of LloydsHBOS group who said they actively do it to increase profits and catch customers out.

MBNA are b*****ds for doing this.

I am sure it is part of their trick to con people. You do a balance transfer and they then alter the payment date by a huge amount to catch you out and therefore cancel your cheap balance transfer rate.

This has happened several times to me. You need to really check the payment date carefully every month.

Think yourself lucky....they did exactly that to me last december and my standing order was then 2 days late...bingo 0% promo gone..default charge of £12...£273 interest backdated to november...plus I effectively lost £420 handling fees paid to get the 0%!!

...they won't refund any of it...in their T+Cs that they can do what they like

..and yes it is designed purely to con people...

..MBNA are not a nice company....I'm currently trying to encourage them to see reason...(via the courts that is..)

...so why is it that I get bombarded with 0% offers and credit card cheques....but MBNA never promote direct debit as a preferred method of payment?

...could it be that they are deliberately trying to set me up to default on any one of their carefully crafted T+Cs?

MBNA are vermin...I hope all of their customers abandon them...they have no ethics whatsoever. It appalls me that they are behind respectable brands such as Virgin...and partners with charities such as the National Trust.

You do like your conspiracy theories, don’t you?

From the information sheet that comes with every invoice in section “Making a payment":
Direct Debit Your Direct Debit payment will be taken regardless of any other additional payments you make. Your Direct Debit will be credited on your payment due date and will be collected from your appointed bank on or after your due date. If you would like to set up a Direct Debit, call ……….. and follow the instructions or visit us at ………

Well, you could try reading.......just a thought! :D

Nah, if they are messing things up then on that basis I wouldn't sign a direct debit! At least the ramifications don't spread to my current account...

But then I never sign them anyway....

by "promote"..direct debit...I meant, MBNA might draw my attention to the fact that direct debit was a safer way for me to pay than writing them a cheque on the side of a large fish, which may also be within their rules.

..but then where's the fun in telling the punters how to avoid the traps they have set you...

..I believe that vitually every other service provider actively encourages direct debit because of its reduced costs to the business...unless of course you prefer to generate your profits by fleecing your customers...
