If you get higher rate mobility, you are entitled to a Disabled Persons' Railcard from National Rail (£18 a year with companion discount) - most local authorities don't provide this. (I'm lucky in that Greater Manchester PTE do, but only for trains within the county.)

You should also, depending on your local authority guidelines, be entitled to the national free bus pass on HRM - just tell them that you are in a wheelchair and are in receipt of higher rate mobility DLA and they should be able to sort you out.

Also most councils allow you to apply under the condition you would be refused a driving license if you wanted to drive. If this applies to you it could be worth trying that criteria.

Oh, and another OT one, if you google cinema pass ,you can get a pass that allows your carer to come in with you for free.
    ** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **
    ** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
    **SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.
  • I would apply and then follow the complaints procedure, as I don't believe that they are interpreting the law correctly. But I'm awkward like that. If it's just one overworked and irritable woman, who resents anyone getting something free, it could be quite possible that she is just being a b**** and her superiors know nothing about it. Conversely, she could be overruled by an idiot boss. Either way, make them have a load of really bad days.

Sorry your council are behaving like that. The below link covers the rules for passes.
As you are in a wheelchair, and need help getting around I suggest you contact your doctor and get them to write a statement covering your disabilities and needs, and send that together with a letter covering the bits on the link.
You are entitled so don't give up.

No, don't give up, you get these characters in councils; I was told by mine, "If you can't walk, why do you want a bus pass!" Could you get support from your ward councillor?

I know Greater Manchester Public Transport allow you to apply and take into account your circumstances if you’re in receipt of High Rate Care have Mental Health Problems. They have a specific application form for you to complete and it’s possible they may call you for a medical or write to your doctor for advice on your medical condition or you could just supply details of medications if they cause side effects. Each case is looked at on individual merits. Passes are usually given out until DLA expires.

I hope you are beginning to make progress on obtaining your travel pass. I have found out about an organisation called HEROS in East Yorkshire who champion people in obtaining their welfare rights, here is a link to their website. http://www.heros.org.uk/contact.asp

If you can, get their email address and email a description of your problem to them.

I tended to do all my communications by email when I started out as I found myself not having records of what was said, whereas with email it gives you more time to think things out. Also I found I had so many things going on, I was becoming confused!!!

There are some other East Yorkshire organisations who might give you assistance in the future.

I hope this is not too much information.
