Proper Idiot Guide for me please!

ok, just got my Dell Lappy ... had major panick for about 10 minutes ... couldn't work out how the very short power supply fitted the Lappy until I noticed that there was another bit that plugged into the Lappy and then the short power supply plugged into a box thingy attached to the cable that is plugged into the Lappy ... and then you can plug it into the wall:rolleyes: *breathe*

Now, I took the telephone wire cable looking thingy and plugged it into the Lappy and then into the BB thing ... and nothing ... tried setting it up (don't ask ... will confuse myself and you even more) but it said cable not connected What am I missing (apart from the obvious brain cells cheeky!) should there be another cable or something that connects the the BB ADSL thingy box??

Would really love to be surfing the internet when O/H walks in and say "look ... ugh!! ... I made internet connection ... UGH!":D :rotfl: but I got that sinking feeling in the pit of my belly already

I am guessing you have connected your laptop to a adsl external modem if so you will have to instal the software that came with your modem and then enter your username and log on details to enable the laptop to access the internet.

you'll need to unplug the modem from the laptop before installing the software.

You won't get a message telling you that the cable is connected as it's looking for a network cable, by the sound of it, and not a modem cable.

if you are using a router, then you plug laptop .. ethernet cable ... router .. telephone cable ... phone point.

if you are using a usb modem , laptop .. usb lead to modem .. phone lead .. phone point.

if router, you need to go to the config page and put passwords for broadband in http:192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 depending on brand.

if usb modem, install the software that came with it, and enter your broadband usename and password
