Just had a quote from a removal company that recons it will take 4 men all day to move a standard 2 bed bungalow to a 4 bed semi
I think it would take all day, but 4 men:confused:
does anyone have any experience of this
Thanks

As the computer in the Sci-Fi movie would say - Insufficient Data.

Have you got all your knick-knacks in boxes? Is the clothing all packed up, are the wardrobes all empty and ready to be just picked up and put in the van? Will the removal men be doing any packing?

    etc
    etc
  • hi thanks for the reply, yes everything will be packed in boxes, all the beds will be dismantled, just ready to pick up and load

First off, how far away are you moving as this will come into the equation? Taking breaks will eat into the working day & removal men do need breaks.

The problem with buying a house & moving is that so many things can affect how long the actual removal takes. On 2 of my previous moves I've arrived with removal men to find that vendor's are still in the process of moving out their belongings & removal men had to sit outside for perhaps a couple of hours before they can begin unloading my belongings.

In one instance the vendors, doing a diy move, had a problem getting out a huge American fridge freezer they had bought & it took them close to 3 hours to finally get it out. This was only when as a final resort they took to hacking off the door frame to finally squeeze it through. I hasten to add that they did send a carpenter round to replace the frame the following week.

I had 3 men doing my move when I came to this house 18 months ago. Because of the delay with vendor's moving their stuff out it was gone 5;30pm when my removal was finally done & they had arrived at my previous home shortly after 10am & worked like trojans loading & unloading my stuff.

If you have large or heavy furniture then a 4 man removal team isn't unreasonable. What you really need to be considering is the final figure. I've used the same company for my last two moves & I get a price that's based on them carrying out the move up till 5pm & a stated hourly extra rate for anything that may go over. I didn't get charged anything for the extra 30mins each of the 3 man team put in on my move here.

If there is a delay with the money transfer this can delay the time you actually complete & are able to take possession of the keys, so some removal companies usually try to allow for such delays in their estimated timings as far as they possibly can.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Thanks cattie, this is the first time weve actually moved so don't really know what is involved in it all
We are moving about 1 mile away to our next property.
I think I was shocked because when I phoned for a quote they said it would probably take 1 van & 2 men to move, then when I received a written quote it was for 1 van & 4 men, I dont think we have a vast amount of furniture and certainly no more than an average 3 bed property

Have you had quotes from other companies? I would not worry about the mechanics of how they want to do it. It comes down to prices quoted and how much you trust each company.

re us: 3 men all day to move 2 of us just 3 miles and they worked very hard. They deserved their tip and the cups of tea and sandwiches. 4 men is better as you will get more sorted before bedtime. It is a stressful day as it is and the quicker it is done the better

A couple of years ago a removals company moved us.

    1. Family of four
    2. 3 bed house
    3. ALOT of things (incl heavy items)
    4. 350 mile trip.

All done in one day (finished before 4pm), with 2 reemovals men.

Was this the Incredible Hulk and his twin brother driving a Ferrari removals van starting in the early hours of the morning - 1.00 a.m.

We moved last monday - 2 bed semi to 3 bed semi, approx. 4 miles away. All small items boxed up, beds dismantled, plus lounge & dining furniture and white goods appliances.

Removals arrived at 4:45pm - 2 bed semi contents packed into one 16ft luton van and a few additional items in another large transit type van - 3 guys doing the loading. Finsihed loading up at 6:30pm.

Arrive at new house 6:45pm, and finish unloading at 8:20pm.

So overall almost 4 hours for the move, with 3 guys and two vans.

I paid £180 for the job, with a tip for them as extra.

i moved last autumn and had 4 men (one packing everything up - a service worth its weight in gold if you can afford it......) and we did it in one day easily.

i thought i would get really stressed but was not - my role all day was "please put that there - no i've changed my mind, can it be moved please" and "who would like tea"
