Accidentally went over CC limit...help!

Hi all,

For the first time ever I accidentally went over the credit limit on my credit card by twenty something pounds. I discovered that I had done it 3 days after the event, and immediately paid it off as soon as I realised what I had done. The only thing is that I now have a slightly uneasy feeling that this might show up as a black mark on my credit file. Does anyone have any experience of this and know what the consequences of this might be?

Thanks! ;)

It won't show up on your credit file, but you will probably get charged £12.

You could probably get the £12 back by phoning them and apologising, explaining that it was a simple oversight etc.

If the 3 day period spanned two statement periods you'll be charged £24 (£32 with Egg).

If you're on a 0% promotion it will be withdrawn.

Your internal credit rating with the lender will suffer badly, even if your external (CRA) data isn't affected.

With the new reporting method, it may be possible for other lenders to see that you have exceeded your credit limit.

Exceeding your credit limit is considered (by the lender) a far worse 'offence' than paying late or missing a payment.

Just out of interest, how was it that you managed to 'forget' what your limit was? After all, it's a limit...not a target to be achieved!

Mind your own business! What the OP uses their credit card for, and how often, etc are absolutely none of your business.

I went over my credit limit with Capital One a few years ago. They had given me a limit of 200 pounds.I had to pay a charge of 25 pounds. But I applied for other credit cards without any problems.

Depending on the answer given by the OP to my question, I have further advice to offer (in addition to the 5 pieces already given).

Do you have anything (more useful) to add to the discussion?

I did that as soon as I realised the mistake. ;)

Thanks for your consideration, Sharpy - that's very  of you! ;) But as it happens, for those who were interested. it was a simple mistake and I didn't 'forget' my credit limit, merely get stuck in a different city with no way of getting home and needed to buy a coach ticket to get there. I thought I had enough money to cover it on the CC, but the transactions I had put on the CC in the few days previous to that hadn't been processed and put on my total yet, and as I was having to buy the ticket very quickly, I didn't have long to do the mental maths. I got it wrong, and am just wondering how much I will get penalised for it, that's all.

Thanks for your help, all. :T
