Car Servicing

Hi

I'm sure my question would have been asked before (despite searching I've not found a previous thread), so sorry if going over old ground.

Just bought a new car and was wondering if having it serviced anywhere but at the dealer would invalidate the warranty?

Normally I would just get it done at the dealership regardless, but in this instance the dealer doesn't have servicing facilities. He has offered to take the car away to the next nearest dealer who can do it, but for ease I was considering taking it to my local garage. Is this OK?

I would appreciate any advice on this matter, as I know next to nothing when it comes to cars
thanks

There is something called "block exemption" which means you can have your car serviced elsewhere. So long as the manufacturer's service schedule is properly followed, and the parts are genuine, (and this is properly recorded) the dealer should have nothing to complain about in the event of a warranty claim.

Makes sense really, otherwise why would there be so many garages and mechanics around.

    Thanks for your help

You do not have to, but I would suggest it is wise to have a new car serviced at a franchised dealer.

Ask if they will provide a free courtesy car, or collect car and return to your home / office.

Dealers will basically tell you lies to scare you into getting the work done at their garage.

Your warranty will not be affected if you take the car elsewhere.

You should always service your car anyway and i would recommend always using genuine bits for 2 reasons,

They are genuine filters and are better quality and some dealers may reject a warranty claim if it is non genuine parts fitted.

The garage performing your non-franchised service must be VAT registered.

    Thats wrong.

I can service my own car and as long as i have proof that i fitted genuine bits they cant turn down the warranty claim.

    Not according to Hyundai;

" The Routine Maintenance Service Record is THE ONLY PROOF that the vehicle has been correctly serviced and that the warranty is valid. All routine maintenance servicing must be supported by a VAT invoice to provide adequate proof that the vehicle has been maintained correctly to reduce the risk of the manufactures Warranty being invalidated. The Routine Maintenance Service Record within the booklet must still be completed. The invoices must detail the Servicing Garage Name, Address, VAT number, Details of the Service carried out and parts that have been replaced etc."

I would imagine, if challenged, that would be deemed an unfair condition.

Possibly, but I have seen similar conditions from other manufacturers, especially the VAT condition.

Is it worth the hassle?? it isn't too dificult to find a VAT Registered non-franchise dealer.

I would be worried about taking my car to any garage that doesn't have an annual turnover of £67k.

I'd be equally concerned about taking my car to a garage that does have an annual turnover over £67k and isn't registered for VAT.
